HAZARDOUS LOCATION PRODUCT GUIDE

26th January 2023

Hazardous Locations

Hazardous locations are defined as areas where dangerous concentrations of flammable gases, vapours, or dusts may occur. Products designed for hazardous locations have to meet the ever increasing CSA and ULC standards and regulations.

Hazardous area products fall into two categories:

  • Intrinsically Safe: Prevents an explosion by restricting the amount of energy entering the device typically by a barrier or isolator
  • Explosion Proof: They have a strong housing to contain an internal explosion or survive in a harsh external environment

Product Categories

Intrinsic Safety

Intrinsic Safety is a protection technique which ensures safe operation of electrical equipment used in hazardous areas. These electronics are specifically designed to limit the electrical and thermal energy to ensure they stay below the point of ignition of the atmospheric mixtures present (flammable gases or dust).

Automation and Controls

There is a wide range of automation and control products that are suitable for use in hazardous locations. A variety of Modular controllers exist depending on the complexity of your application in addition to distributed I/O systems that can help with modular designs and scalability.

Connectivity Solutions

Certain hazardous environments require explosion proof or ATEX-rated connectors for code compliance and to ensure safety of personnel and equipment.

Motors

Siemens rugged explosion-protected motors are certified for hazardous location atmospheres containing dust and/or gas according to UL and CSA requirements or ATEX requirements.

Process Instrumentation

Process Instruments are often installed in areas classified as hazardous according to CSA, IEC or NEC. Such projects have certain challenges including the design phase, components selection, installation, and regular maintenance.

Video Cameras

These IP video cameras are designed for locations classified as hazardous and can be used when video surveillance is required.

Enclosures and Signaling

These enclosures are able to contain explosions originating within and to prevent sparks from igniting vapours/gases and/or dust in the surrounding environment. Hazardous Location Signaling Devices are designed to alert you to critical equipment and system needs on the plant floor.

Heating Solutions

Specific electric heating equipment can be used safely in hazardous areas to protect pipes, valves, tanks and equipment but certain precautions must be taken to remove the risk of fire and explosions.

Lighting Solutions

Explosion Proof Lighting is also known as Hazardous Location Lighting or Intrinsically Safe Lighting. These lights are designed for use in environments where flammable vapours and/or dust exist or have the potential to exist.

Hazardous Area Mobile Devices

Hazardous area mobile devices for explosion-hazardous areas. With solutions for mobile safety and communication, customer applications are quickly digitalized. This unlocks new potential and increases workflow safety, efficiency, and transparency—either in conventional applications or for Industry 4.0 scenarios.

Benefits of LED Lighting Fixtures

There is a lot of talk about the efficiency of LED lighting. Here is an example of the efficiency and savings you can expect by switching to LED if you have 10 fixtures that are on 4380 hours per year:

When you choose energy efficient LED products, both BC Hydro and Energy Efficiency Alberta have incentive programs to help lower customer costs. E.B. Horsman & Son’s staff can help you to apply for those inventives.

Anything that uses traditional energy (electricity) automatically produces greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming. Energy-saving LED lights use less energy to produce the same light output, which means you not only save money on your Hydro bill, but also do your part for the environment.

LED lights have a lifetime that is up to 10 times longer than traditional lights. This allows you to replace LEDs less frequently than traditional lights, meaning you save money and reduce your light disposal and waste.

Understanding total cost of ownership is key when considering LED products. Initially LEDs are more expensive but beacuse of their efficiency, they are less expensive to run overtime. Furthermore, the life of LED products is up to 10x longer compared to traditional products.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is the quantitative measure of how accurately a light is rendering colour when compared to a perfect reference light. It is measured in percent, the higher the percentage the more accurate the colour rendering.

Valves for Refining Applications

The refining industry has undergone many changes, from the methods of processing to the length of time that they operate their process units. These changes, along with the emergence of low sulfur fuel specifications, the requirement to process lower grade crude and the need to convert more bottom-of-the-barrel residuals, has put an extreme demand on isolation and control valves. Unreliable and unpredictable valves in emergency situations can cause enormous monetary losses and have devastating consequences for personnel. MOGAS has responded to these challenges by developing a combination of diverse trim configurations and high quality coatings for use in high temperature, high pressure, erosive, corrosive, viscous and coking / asphaltene applications.

Valves for Slurry Transport

MOGAS has been providing slurry pipeline valve solutions in some of the toughest applications and remote locations worldwide for over three decades. Large pipeline valves (36-inch and larger), small drain valves and high pressure block valves are just some of the types of mining valves MOGAS designs and manufactures. In the metals and minerals market, valves must operate dependably for long periods of time. Rugged forgings with severe service metal balls and seats ensure a reliable operation for handling particulates and sludge.

Valves for Autoclave Processes

Pressure leaching and oxidation are two of the most demanding extraction methods in the mining industry and require dependable, time-tested severe service valves and coatings. Whether leaching with acid injection or oxygen, the valves used in these plants must withstand corrosive and abrasive slurries, as well as endure punishing temperatures and pressures. For several decades, MOGAS has been the leading provider of severe service metal-seated ball valves in autoclave applications such as HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leach) and POx (Pressure Oxidation). Reliable valve operation is crucial, since these plants are often located close to the ore beds—making travel challenging, should service be required. Harsh media and tough operating conditions make a proven, application-specific valve design essential to the economic performance of the operation.

GUIDE TO FIBER TERMINATION

8th May 2017

What is Fiber Termination

Fiber cable termination is the addition of connectors to an optical fiber in a cable. The glass fibers need connectors fitted before attached to any fiber network equipment.

Why Do We Terminate Fibers?

  1. Create a connection to a device or transceiver
  2. Extend the length of a cable
  3. Create a multiplexed cable for extensive networks

Common Methods to Terminate Fibers

1. Mechanical termination:

Mechanical splices are used to create two permanent joints between two fibers using an alignment fixture to reduce loss of light. Mechanical splices achieve this by matching the optical properties of the glass with index gel or optical adhesive. It is commonly used for Industrial and Commercial applications , both indoor and outdoor.

2. Fusion termination:

It is process of fusing or welding two fibers together by using an electric arc. This essentially means that the two glass fibers are being melted together to create one fiber. Fusion splicing provides the lowest loss and least reflectance as well as providing the strongest and most reliable joint between two fibers.

Fusion termination is recommended for certified jobs requiring very low dB loss because it provides better and stronger connection than mechanical splices, although it requires more costly equipment.

Top Concerns

1. Knowledge

  • Many users are unaware of the application for fiber and the knowledge required to terminate the connection.

2. Infrastructure

  • When applying a fiber network, one must consider the entire network and bandwidth.

3. Incorrect Product Selection

  • Every cable and connector has a specific application. One must be aware of the correct connection types to minimize loss and reflectance.

4. Training

  • Technicians should be trained on using the fiber termination tools and splicing a connector, but there are limited resources that offer this training.

Our Solutions

1. Experienced and Knowledgeable Staff

  • E.B. Horsman staff been involved in fiber projects for over 30 years and are always up to date with manufacturers’ latest fiber termination technology.

2. Cost

  • Fiber optic costs are being more comparable to high-end copper solutions.

3. Practical Termination Products

  • Advanced fiber termination products are becoming more user-friendly and require limited knowledge in fiber termination.

4. Training sessions for customers

  • We have the capability to set up training sessions for individuals to provide hands-on mechanical and fusion terminations training.

Rittal Cooling Systems

Rittal’s TopTherm Blue e+ and Blue e Wall-mounted Air Conditioners are designed to maintain a set temperature, making it one of the most flexible solutions for the dissipation of heat from enclosures and electronic cases. Order yours today and ensure that your electrical components do not overheat this summer!

Enclosure cooling units are the most widely used and most flexible solution for the dissipation of heat from enclosures and electronic cases in industrial environments. They have a high cooling capacity (300 – 6,000W) enabling the enclosure’s internal temperature to be cooled to well below the ambient temperature. This makes air conditioners an ideal option for hot and humid locations that have an ambient temperature up to 130°F.

Blue e+ cooling units

The Blue e+ uses an innovative process that relies upon two parallel cooling circuits working together, adjusting to the desired temperature of the enclosure. The integral heat pipe passively dissipates heat while active cooling is achieved via the compressor’s cooling circuit with variable speed-controlled components. This unique inverter technology provides cooling output that is on target at the time it is needed. By combining variable speed cooling components, Blue e+ delivers significant energy savings and a longer service life for the enclosure components.

GUIDE TO MOTOR CIRCUIT ANALYSIS AND MOTOR TESTERS

Automation, Contorls & Motion Division

What is Motor Circuit Analysis (MCA™)?

Motor Circuit Analysis (MCA)™ is a de-energized test method to assess the health of a motor. This method can be initiated from the Motor Control Center (MCC) or directly at the motor. The advantage to testing from the MCC is that the entire electrical portion of the motor system, including the connections and cables between the test point and the motor, is evaluated.

How does MCA™ work?

The electrical portion of a three-phase motor system contains the basic motor circuit, which is nothing more than 3 simple RCL circuits (resistive, capacitive, inductive). Each basic circuit represents one phase of the three-phase motor system. Since each phase of the motor system is identical, each basic circuit should respond the same way to an applied signal. This is also true for single-phase and DC motors.

ALL-TEST Pro instruments apply a series of low voltage, non-destructive sinusoidal AC signals through the motor windings and measure the response to these signals. Winding faults are indicated by variances in the response to the applied signal through the windings. This de-energized test takes only a few minutes and can even be performed by an entry-level technician.

The measurements* rendered by MCA™ include:

  • Resistance for connection and cable related issues.
  • Impedance and inductance for rotor issues, such as air gap, casting voids, and broken/fractured rotor bars.
  • Dissipation Factor to determine if the winding to ground is contaminated or overheated.
  • Developing winding shorts, turn to turn, coil to coil, or phase to phase are detected and trended using Fi (phase angle) & I/F (current frequency response) measurements.**
  • TVS™ (Test Value Static) is compared to a Reference TVS™ and if a change occurs this indicates that a change in the condition of the stator and/or rotor has occurred.
  • Dynamic Stator and Rotor Signatures*** is used to automatically assess the condition of the stator and rotor, and provides the Stator & Rotor ‘OK’, ‘Warn’, or ‘Bad’.
  • It is important to note that TVS™ is independent of rotor position in a motor in good condition. TVS™ and the Dynamic Stator and Rotor Signatures are patent and patent-pending and represent a significant breakthrough in motor testing technology. Insulation to ground is also tested looking for issues related to the ground wall.

*Number of measurements depend upon model of MCA instrument.

**Fi is the phase angle of the applied voltage and the resulting flow of current measured in degrees. I/F is the percent reduction in current flow when the applied frequency is exactly doubled.

***Dynamic Stator and Rotor Signature is for testing AC induction with squirrel-cage rotor motors <1000V.

Why Traditional Megohmmeter Testing Isn’t Enough

Avoid unplanned downtime by proactively and thoroughly testing your motor for faults. This means going beyond the capabilities of a traditional Megohmmeter. Megohmmeter insulation testing will only detect faults to ground. Since only a fraction of motor electrical winding failures begin as ground faults, they will go undetected using this method alone. Moreover, surge testing requires the application of high voltages. This can be destructive when testing a motor, making it an unsuitable method for troubleshooting and true predictive maintenance testing.

ALL-TEST Pro offers more complete motor testing than any other options on the market. Their instruments go above and beyond normal testing equipment for accurate, safe, and fast motor testing. Motor testing using an MCA™ tool is very easy to implement, and the test takes less than 3 minutes. Save money and time by proactively detecting developing faults before they cause irreversible motor failures.

Successful Applications Using MCA™

  • AC/DC Motors
  • AC/DC Traction Motors
  • Generators / Alternators
  • Machine Tool Motors
  • Servo Motors
  • Control Transformers
  • Transmission & Distribution Transformers (Virtually Any Size)
  • For Commissioning Testing
  • For Troubleshooting
  • For Reliability Testing

ALL-TEST PRO™ 31

  • Locates winding faults such as turn to turn and coil to coil, along with grounded windings
  • Rotor test helps detect problems such as broken rotor bars and eccentricity
  • Measures impedance (Z), phase angle (Fi), current/frequency response (I/F), and insulation to ground resistance (500V or 1000V and measure to 500 meg-ohm)
  • Performs a quick pass/fail rotor test

MOTOR GENIE®

  • Locates winding faults such as turn to turn and coil to coil, along with grounded windings
  • Measures impedance (Z), phase angle (Fi), current/frequency response (I/F), and insulation to ground resistance (500V or 1000V and measure to 500 meg-ohm)
