Portable equipment is frequently used in commercial Garages, service Bays, and maintenance shops. The frequent use of portable equipment to accommodate different tasks can create or lead to situations where shock is more likely to occur. When a worker is focused on a task in front of them, leakage current from damaged cords and cables can present itself to those unsuspecting personnel.

For welding applications, if the ground lead is damaged or not setup properly, then welding current will take alternate paths through facility structure, ground conductors, and conduit fittings. When this stray current runs through conduit or control panels, it causes the conductors to heat up and melt insulation. The SB5000’s built-in ground monitoring ensures the effective ground-fault current path stays intact and proactively prevents future shock hazards from occurring.

How Does The Shock Block Work?

When a leakage current is detected the SB5000 interrupts the circuit, significantly reducing or eliminating the shock potential. One key safety feature is that the SB5000 also monitors the ground wire from the SB5000 to the load for continuity. If the wire is broken or becomes loose, the SB5000 will signal an alarm and de- energize the circuit in less than half of a second.

1. Current travels through body
2. Current transformer picks up current imbalance
3. Sensor detects current flowing outside of its intended path and opens circuit. Fault is cleared and personnel are protected
4. Loss of grounding will de-energize load (if ground wire is high resistance, a ground fault can create a hazardous voltage across the human body)

Dual/Duplex BT Bolt-on Breakers: These new devices complement the BT and BQ breaker line of products.

Siemens Canada is pleased to announce the launch of dual/duplex BT bolt-on breakers. These space-saver duplex breakers combine two independent 1/2″ breaker poles in a common unit. The unit bolts onto one panelboard stab and requires one panel space and it is HACR rated. The BT series can be used anywhere a BL 1-pole will fit, up to 22kAIC.

Features & Benefits 

  • Allows for single 15A or 20A tandem BT bolt-on breaker (B1515, B1515H, B2020, B2020H) to feed two 15A circuits or 20A circuits in place of 15A or 20A 1-pole BL breakers in a lighting panel or similar device.
  • For existing Siemens lighting panels, existing BL 15A or 20A 1-pole breakers can be replaced with tandem BT bolt-on breakers to free up space as needed. The quantity is limited to the available neutral connections in the panel.
  • P1-P3 lighting panels are improved in design to allow the following minimum number of Tandem BT bolt-on breakers (consult chart presented in fliers/product catalogue):
    1. 18-circuit panels will allow at least 10 BT twins
    2. 30-circuit panels will allow at least 20 BT twins
    3. 42-, 54-, and 66-circuit panels will allow at least 30 BT twins
  • Older panels may have fewer neutral connection and will not allow as many BTs as shown. (primary restriction is the number of neutral positions available; must verify prior to installing in existing panels if there are enough neutral connections available).

Nuisance Tripping Arc Fault Breaker Findings

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) Findings:

1. All manufactures experience nuisance tripping with their Arc Faults to some degree.

2. This not a “defective” breaker issue. Our Supplier Partner, Siemens, has tested hundreds of breakers returned from the field, that were returned as “defective”; Not one breaker has been identified as “defective”.

3. Testing has shown that Arc Fault Breaker tripping is due to the following:

  • An actual arc which indicates the breaker is doing its job
  • Overcurrent (the appliances drawing more amps than allowed)
  • Electronic Noise caused by the loads on the circuits

Appliances and Home Electronics don’t have to meet any operating standsards in order to prove they can operate with Arc Fault Technology.

  • It is probable that certain appliances create wave forms similar to arcing as part of normal operation. This causes nuisance tripping.
  • It is possible other devices in the home are creating strong enough wave forms, in the panel, that can be picked up by the breaker. These can be perceived as an arc and cause nuisance tripping.

 

 

AFCI Breakers vs Standard Breakers

AFCI vs Standard Circuit Breaker: Your new home may differ from your previous home, in that your new home has arc fault breakers. Arc Fault breakers are required in homes built after 2015 and may react differently causing tripping where they hadn’t in your previous home. This new incompatibility is due to the differences in the breakers functionality and the protection they provide.

  1. Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads and short circuits, therefore they do not protect against arcing conditions.
  2. An Arc Fault Circuit Breaker (AFCI) is a circuit breaker that breaks the circuit when it detects electronic arc signals. Those signals are a signs of loose connections or damaged wires in a home. Loose connections, which can develop over time, and damaged wires or cords can become hot enough to ignite house fires. AFCI’s are devices designed to protect against fires caused by arcing faults in the home electrical wiring. The AFCI circuitry continuously monitors the current to detect unwanted arcing conditions. Once detected, the AFCI opens its internal contacts, thus de-energizing the circuit and reducing the potential for a fire to occur.

Troubelshooting Tips

Best Practices:

  1. Beware that the circuit is not overloaded with an excessive amount of electronics (load or current). The breaker is only able to support a specified amount of wattage, and if exceeded, the breaker will trip.
  2. All electronics purchased should be CSA listed, or equivalent, and comply with CSA standard C22.2 No. 270, or they may cause unnecessary tripping.
  3. Make sure furniture is not on or pushing against electrical wires.
  4. If any blackened plugs, very damaged wires, or noisy circuit breakers are discovered, an electrical problem has occurred and the homeowner should call an electrician.
  5. Check that all connections between a light socket and a light bulb base are tight including garage door openers. An arc can occur in a loose connection, which will cause the AFCI breaker to trip.

 

Electrical Contractors Best Practices:

  1. Ensure wires are secure on receptacles, recommended that wires are secured with the screw, friction fit backstabbing is not recommended.
  2. 20amp arc faults on Microwave circuits. This reduces nuisance tripping due to microwave overcurrent.
  3. Separate HRV and Hot water tanks onto separate circuits.
  4. Separate lighting and switches onto non-arc fault circuits.
  5. Route wires in strategic areas so homeowners and other trades are less likely to pierce through a wire.
  6. If possible, perform work after the other trades, i.e. HVAC and plumbing, have completed.
  7. Ensure properly maintained tools are used, i.e. sharp blades.

 

Suggested Ways to Handle Recurring Nuisance Tripping:

1. A Dual Function breaker has been proven to hold on circuits where Arc Fault breaker nuisance tripping is occurring

  • CAUTION – we do not recommend using the Dual Function breaker on all circuits. It has proven to be an effective alternative on circuits where the current appliances are not compatible with Arc Fault technology and are causing nuisance tripping.

2. Re-test your breakers before resorting to the Dual Function breaker as a solution

Challenge: Now more than ever, end-users require the capability to track data and real-time data analysis.

Siemens Solution: In addition to the SIRIUS 3RA6 compact starter, which can be easily connected to the IO-Link master via a standardized IO-Link connection, we also offer 3RA27 function modules for establishing IO-Link connection. These function modules can be fitted directly onto the 3RT2 SIRIUS contactors making complete groups of load feeders capable of communication. A commonly used accessory is the 3 phase busbar system, which allows multiple load feeders to be fed from a single incoming line feed. What is a load center?

A loadcentre is a metal enclosed distribution panel containing circuit breakers which distribute, protect and control lighting and power circuits in residential and light commercial applications, including single-family homes, townhouses, apartment buildings, and small office buildings.

Why Siemens Load centers?

All Siemens Loadcentres can be classified into two types: main lug or main circuit breaker. Each Siemen’s Loadcentre consists of three basic components: the enclosure, the interior, and the trim. The enclosure is used to contain the circuit breakers which mount on the interior. The trim seals the enclosure, offering protection to personnel from the environment.
