Here are some tips to prevent industrial and commercial power surges.

The post How to Prevent Industrial and Commercial Power Surges appeared first on E.B. Horsman & Son.

]]>
Power surges can happen in a second, yet the damage they cause to your assets can be long-lasting. A number of factors can lead to surges including bad wiring, overloaded circuits, lightning, and power grid failure. Remember that power surges always happen after a power outage, so quick response time is important.

Here are some of the basics to help keep your assets safe from power surges.

Stay Safe with Surge Protection Devices

Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are electrical components used for voltage protection in power supply circuits and electrical distribution networks. When there’s an unusual increase in voltage, surge protectors redirect electricity away from your devices, preventing equipment damage and lost production time.

Using a Mersen SPD on your electrical distribution panel ensures a high degree of surge protection. Features include:

 • LED protection indicator
 • Easy installation and minimal investment
 • Thermally protected components ensure surge protection
 • Surge protection for Lighting (LED installation)

How Surge Bars Help

Surge bars are essential for protecting your electronic equipment. The Leviton 5500-190 provides point-of-use surge suppression. It features six protected duplex receptacles, an easy-access on/off switch, and a resettable circuit breaker to protect against overloading and power supply failure. To avoid unnecessary equipment switching, you can opt for one without a switch.

Commercial Surge Prevention Tips

While you can’t stop storms and power grid failures, you can take these steps to prevent power surges and damage in your commercial space:

 • Get a licensed electrician to install a main service panel suppressor, and make sure it’s inspected regularly.
 • If possible, unplug all electrical devices during storms.
 • Use and understand commercial or industrial-grade surge protectors.
 • Hire a licensed electrician to do regular wiring inspections.
 • Use energy-efficient equipment to reduce electricity consumption.
 • Make sure you have equipment breakdown insurance, just in case you need it.

Industrial Surge Protection Tips

Surge protection is a key priority for your industrial facility, too. You can achieve this with:

 • Automation and control help you manage systems and prevent damage to your critical components
 • Heavy equipment and instrumentation suppress excess voltage
 • Motion controls block or short voltage over operating limits
 • LED lights cut back on energy use (but have sensitive electronic parts vulnerable to power surges)
 • Programmable logic controls act as the brains of your control panel
 • Protecting your facility’s main circuit breaker and equipment both indoors and outdoors in advance can help you prepare for unexpected surges
 • Comprehensive low-resistance grounding resistor systems protect power transformers and generators from damaging fault currents
 • Data line and power protection keeps your electronic equipment connected during a crisis

Class, Zone, and Division: Explaining Hazardous Location Ratings https://ebhorsman.com/product-spotlights/class-zone-and-division-explaining-hazardous-location-ratings/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 20:23:33 +0000 https://ebhorsman.com/?p=24833 Learn what each hazardous location classification means with this handy rating guide.

The post Class, Zone, and Division: Explaining Hazardous Location Ratings appeared first on E.B. Horsman & Son.

]]>
Understanding the different classifications for hazardous locations is crucial for safety at your worksite. What exactly do Class, Zone, and Division mean? Let’s dive in and take a closer look.

What’s Considered a ‘Hazardous Location’ in the Electrical Industry?

A hazardous location is an area that has the potential for fire or explosion, whether due to the presence of flammable gases, vapours, dust, or fibres, and where special precautions and equipment are necessary.

Examples of hazardous locations include grain elevators and mills, oil refineries, mines, textile mills, and chemical manufacturing facilities.

Hazardous Location Classifications at a Glance

The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) outlines specific categories to help identify and manage these risks, known as Class, Zone, and Division. Each one is defined by the type of hazardous material present and risk level.

But there are further specifications based on location and industry. For example, in locations with risk of fire, the National Fire Code of Canada addresses fire safety in buildings, including for electrical installations in hazardous locations.

As well, each province can adopt and modify the CEC to suit local requirements, such as under the Alberta Electrical Utility Code. Be sure to know which codes apply in your area.

What Do the Different Hazardous Location Classes Mean?

Hazardous locations are categorized into three main classes—each defined by the type of hazardous material present and associated risks.

Class I: Gases, Vapours, and Liquids

This category includes places where flammable gases, vapours, or liquids are present, with a risk of creating explosive atmospheres when mixed with air. Examples are petroleum refineries, chemical plants, and gasoline storage areas.

Class 1 locations can be subdivided into zones (Zone 0, Zone 1, or Zone 2) or divisions (Division 1 and Division 2), depending on specific circumstances and risks.

Class II: Dusts

These are areas where combustible dust could accumulate and create explosive atmospheres. Industries such as grain handling, sugar production, and woodworking often have Class II hazardous locations. Class II locations typically use divisions (Division 1 and Division 2).

Class III: Fibres and Flyings

These include spaces where ignitable fibres, or flyings, are present—such as textile mills, wood shops, and paper mills. While fibres are not typically in the air, they can accumulate around machinery or equipment. Class III locations also use divisions (Division 1 and Division 2).

What’s the Difference Between Zone and Division?

Hazardous locations in Canada are sub-divided into zones or divisions, as outlined in the CEC. These sub-categories provide more specific information about the risk and conditions of a particular hazardous location.

Zones

Used mainly for Class I locations, the zone classification system is based on the frequency and duration of explosive gases or vapours. You’ll need to apply this more recent and internationally harmonized system for all new construction. This system is also especially useful for complex environments where detailed risk assessment is necessary.

Divisions

Divisions are used in Class I, II, and III locations. A broader classification system, divisions are often used in less complex environments. This older method is still applied and may be used during maintenance or repair work in your building.

Below is a table outlining how classifications interact with zones and divisions depending on potential hazards and location examples.

Note: you can’t mix zones and divisions within a single class location—they are separate systems for defining risks within classes.

Special Considerations: Mills, Mines, and Marine Environments

Some common industry environments here in Canada are mills, mines, and marine locations. But how do you typically classify these?

In addition to Class I and Class II, the CEC includes zones for areas where combustible dust or fibres are present. These are commonly applicable to mills, mines, and marine environments.

Mills, Mines, and Marine Environments

Mills

Grain-handling areas might be classified under Zone 20, which is where combustible dust or fibres are present continuously or for long periods, making them high-risk areas. Explosive dust atmosphere in the air in occasional clouds—or Class II, Division 2—hazardous dust clouds may occur during abnormal operation—due to the presence of combustible grain dust.

Similar to grain-handling areas, flour mills may also fall under Zone 20 or Class II, Division 2 due to the risk of flour-dust explosions.

Be mindful that different zones or divisions often exist at the same location. For example, a flour mill might be classified Zone 20 for its flour-handling area, while its office area is a safe zone.

Mines

Depending on the presence of methane gas or coal dust, underground tunnels could be classified as Zone 0 or Zone 1—explosive gas atmosphere present continuously or occasionally.

They could also fall under Class I, Division 1 or Class II, Division 1—hazardous atmosphere or dust cloud present continuously or periodically.

Marine Environments

Knowing about hazardous locations is also important for marine transportation, a common hazardous location on the coasts of Canada.

Engine rooms and fuel-storage areas are likely to be classified as Zone 0—continuous explosive gas atmosphere. They could also be under Class I, Division 1—hazardous atmosphere present continuously—due to vapours from gasoline, diesel, or other flammable liquids.

Ensuring Safety in Hazardous Locations

To prevent accidents, injuries, and potential disasters, there are some key safety precautions to follow.

Conduct Risk Assessments

To better understand your specific location, conduct a thorough risk assessment to identify hazards and accurately classify your area. Only use equipment that’s properly rated equipment as classified.

Educate Staff

Ensure that your staff is well-trained and educated on both hazards and necessary safety protocols. Regulations change often, so follow industry experts or contact experienced professionals to educate staff with accurate information.

Establish Regular Maintenance Practices

Regular maintenance and equipment inspections will help you maintain safety standards and ensure all systems function correctly.

Ensure that ventilation systems are operating smoothly to keep locations well-ventilated and disperse hazardous gases, vapours, and dust accordingly.

Keep Areas Well-Lit

Proper lighting is crucial. But make sure to use lighting brands and products that are designed specifically for hazardous locations, such as ABB’s Hazlux® line. This high-quality, industrial line is known for specializing in enhancing visibility and reducing risk in hazardous locations in harsh conditions.

Work With Experts

Rely on advice from industry professionals, and always source quality products from renowned suppliers and trusted distributors.

Stay Up-To-Date

Getting to know these categories will help you ensure proper safety measures and compliance when flammable gases, vapours, dust, or fibres are present at a work site.

For more detailed information, refer to the latest edition of the CEC. And be sure to consult with qualified electricians to determine the appropriate classification for your environment.

The post Which Pin and Sleeve To Use: A Comparison of Connectors, Plugs, and Receptacles appeared first on E.B. Horsman & Son.

]]>
Choosing the right pin and sleeve device—otherwise known as plugs and receptacles—is crucial to ensure safety and on your electrical project’s job site.

But it’s tough to find the right one you need. Let’s look into different pin and sleeve options to find the right option for your project.

But First: What Are Pins and Sleeves?

Also called industrial connectors or plugs and receptacles, pins and sleeves are robust, weather-resistant electrical devices. They securely seal your power connections in harsh environments by interlocking a male pin (plug) and female sleeve (receptacle).

How Do Pin and Sleeves—or Plugs and Receptacles—Work?

The interlocking design—thanks to the ground plug—keeps the connection stable, especially in areas with bumps or vibrations.

The protective sleeve, or receptacle, shields the connection from dust and moisture, making these ideal for industrial and manufacturing environments, construction sites, and anywhere else that a reliable and secure electrical connection is necessary.

While pins and sleeves might all look similar, they each serve a specific purpose for a particular setting. Let’s look at different plugs and receptacles from top brands: Crouse-Hinds, Wiedmüller, Leviton, and Meltric.

Differences Between Leviton, Wiedmüller, Meltric, and Crouse-Hinds Plugs and Receptacles

As you can see, the pin and sleeve from each company is for different purposes.

How to Know Which Plug and Receptacle to Use

To determine which one you need, start by identifying the voltage and current requirements of your project. You want to ensure the connectors are compatible with your equipment and can handle the electrical load.

Then, consider exposure to water, dust, or extreme temperatures. To withstand harsh environments, look for connectors made of weather-resistant materials, such as heavy-duty plastic or metal.

Make sure they have proper certifications, such as IP ratings for dust and water protection, or IEC or UL ratings to ensure compliance and safety, and ergonomic design for easy handling and installation.

Are Connectors Interchangeable?

Industrial connectors are not generally interchangeable due to different designs, voltage and current ratings, and safety standards.

They’re designed for specific uses, and have unique pin configurations and mechanical keying to prevent mismating. Additionally, manufacturers may also have proprietary designs that aren’t compatible with other brands.

Can you provide insights or expert advice on topics related to your industry or niche that would be valuable to your customers?

Several innovative approaches and technologies are reshaping the landscape of the construction industry, offering significant value to customers. Three key areas that are making a substantial impact are collaboration, prefabrication, and virtual design technology.

Effective collaboration is the cornerstone of successful construction projects. By fostering a collaborative environment among all stakeholders—architects, engineers, contractors, and clients—we can ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Collaborative platforms and tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) facilitate real-time communication and data sharing, reducing misunderstandings and errors. This integrated approach helps in aligning everyone’s efforts towards a common goal, ultimately delivering better outcomes for customers.

Prefabrication is transforming the way we approach construction by manufacturing building components off-site in a controlled environment. This method offers numerous benefits, including reduced construction time, minimized waste, and enhanced quality control. For customers, this means faster project delivery, cost savings, and a lower environmental impact. Prefabrication also allows for greater precision and consistency, as components are produced using advanced machinery and techniques, ensuring higher standards of workmanship.

Virtual design technology, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), is revolutionizing the planning and execution phases of construction projects. These technologies enable stakeholders to visualize and interact with the building model before construction begins. Customers can experience a virtual walkthrough of the project, providing them with a clear understanding of the final outcome and allowing for adjustments to be made early in the design process. This proactive approach not only enhances customer satisfaction but also reduces the likelihood of costly changes and rework during construction.

By leveraging collaboration, prefabrication, and virtual design technology, the construction industry is able to deliver more efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality projects. These advancements not only benefit the industry but also provide significant value to customers, ensuring that their expectations are met and often exceeded. As we continue to embrace these innovations, the potential for even greater improvements in project outcomes and customer satisfaction will only increase.

What are your plans for the future, and how do you envision your company continuing to thrive for the next 80 years?

Our vision for the future is built on a foundation of innovation, excellence, and a commitment to our people and community. Over the next 80 years, we plan to focus on several key areas to ensure our continued success and growth:

Embracing Technology: As the world evolves, so too must our approach to business. We are committed to investing in cutting-edge technology to enhance our operations, improve efficiency, and deliver superior results. By staying at the forefront of technological advancements, we can offer innovative solutions to our clients and maintain our competitive edge in the industry.

Growing Our Business: Our roots are in BC, and we are proud to contribute to the local economy through the delivery of exceptional projects. We plan to expand our presence in the region by exploring new markets, forging strategic partnerships, and diversifying our portfolio. This growth will enable us to take on more ambitious projects and create additional job opportunities within the community.

Community Engagement: Our success is intertwined with the well-being of the communities we serve. We will continue to support local initiatives, engage in charitable activities, and collaborate with community leaders to support local issues. By giving back to the community, we strengthen our relationships and build a more resilient and vibrant BC.

How has Houle contributed to the local community or industry throughout its history, and what initiatives are you involved in currently?

Houle’s commitment to the community extends beyond our projects. We have a long-standing tradition of supporting organizations that do incredible work in our communities. This includes groups like the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. As a company, we want to see people thrive in the communities where we live.

Established in 1982, Ledalite is a Lean-certified manufacturer that adheres to World Class Manufacturing (WCM). With its 210,000 sq. foot facility in Langley, British Columbia, Ledalite is an innovator in lighting. Their goal to create spaces that feel bright and natural combined with their architecturally pleasing designs, has led Ledalite to create solutions inspired by nature.

Ground-Breaking Lighting Technologies

Research & Development (R&D) are at the core of Ledalite’s innovations. Take MesoOptics, for example. Like many scientific breakthroughs, it was inspired by nature. Butterfly wings consist of three-dimensional crystal nanostructures, which selectively curve and scatter light. MesoOptics uses holographic technology to replicate this effect. Combined with intelligent luminaire design, it creates an optimal batwing light distribution. And with controlled brightness, it simultaneously reduces glare to deliver greater work plane uniformity. This not only improves visual comfort but provides the ability to lower footcandle levels, reducing energy consumption.

TruGroove by Ledalite

Ledalite TruGroove Micro embodies Ledalite’s clean aesthetic and commitment to innovation. High efficacy AccuRender is TruGroove micro’s standard CRI 90+ R9 50 offering. Its optimized color quality also meets TM 30’s Appendix E rigorous ratings for color rendering and preference. Ledalite’s precision optics deliver visual comfort, greater uniformity and spacing ratios contributing to lower lumens/watt and reduced project costs.

Unique MesoOptics technology

With all good inventions comes research and development; this is why Ledalite invested millions of dollars into their technology development and revolutionized the lighting industry with their MesoOptics. MesoOptics is a new scientific breakthrough inspired by nature that replicates the same effect of butterfly wing’s three-dimensional crystal nanostructures that selectively curve and scatter light using holographic technology. With the use of patented processes, the lighting distributions are less than 5 microns in size; these light distributions are applied to a recyclable substrate that creates a highly efficient and unique lighting control approach. MesoOptics can be customizable to fit the requirements of any environment. For help customizing your Ledalite MesoOptics, contact your local E.B. Horsman branch.

The TruGroove family utilizes unique MesoOptics technology to help minimize glare.

 • Freeform elliptical lens optic redirects light laterally from a central strip of LEDs into a wide batwing distribution in the upper hemisphere.
 • Diffuser with integrated MesoOptics DX film provides a controlled batwing distribution in the lower hemisphere.

TruGroove recessed and recessed micro

You can choose between 3-inch and 1-3/4-inch micro apertures. TruGroove recessed lighting with corner details defines space, offering a modern, functional design that combines illuminated movement with sustainable elegance.

TruGroove suspended and suspended micro

Both the classic 3″ and the the micro 1-3/4″ aperture deliver exceptional uniformity and wide row spacing . Custom colors an angles are available.

10-day QuickShip Program

Ledalite quick ship

You don’t have to sacrifice product quality and performance for critical timing. With the Ledalite QuickShip program, your order will ship within 10 working days of order receipt.

This program applies to almost all of their product families, so while we can’t increase the speed of light, we did find a way to get you your lighting faster.

Ledalite – Nature Connect

Daylight is something so natural, that often we do not even realize how important it is to us. The exposure to the right amounts of light during the day, as well as the colors and dynamics from nature, strongly impact our mood, energy levels, comfort, quality of sleep and our health and wellbeing in general.

On average we spend more than 90% of our time indoors, where we do not get the right amount and quality of light to feel happy and healthy.

The NatureConnect lighting innovation by Signify is built on proven Biophilic Design principles to reconnect us to the outside world. It mimics the natural patterns of daylight indoors to create comfortable, engaging and attractive environments.

Streamlined Control and Flexibility with Caseta Smart Lighting

Caseta delivers a seamless blend of safety, convenience, and scalability, all without the need for complex wiring. It’s an ideal solution for residential properties, particularly homes, condos or townhouses, with a size of 2,000 square feet or less.

Take advantage of wireless controls to relocate switches without the hassle of additional wiring or special retrofitting. Caseta offers the flexibility of controlling individual fixtures or personalizing settings to your preference.

The all-off feature of Caseta eliminates the need for wiring. A single Pico remote can manage up to 10 devices or switches. Imagine having the power to control all the switches in your two-bedroom home, living room, kitchen, and bathroom with just one Pico remote. As you leave your home, a simple press of the off button on the Pico remote turns off all lights.

While it’s not necessary to connect Caseta to its bridge, doing so unlocks additional features. Schedule lights to turn on at specific times, program an all-off sweep, or set different scenes. For instance, if you’re watching a movie and want your kitchen lights at 20% brightness and your TV room at 15%, instead of manually adjusting each dimmer on your device, you can press a single button named “Movie Time” to set all lights to their programmed settings.

Enhance Security with Geofencing and Remote Lighting Control

If connected to the bridge, geofencing allows you to set up a perimeter around your bridge that triggers certain lights when breached, ensuring you never have to enter a dark apartment. If you live in a condo with parkade access, you can even turn on selected house lights via your phone as you reach the elevator, enhancing both convenience and safety.

Above all, Caseta prioritizes safe and secure entry. Consider the case of an elderly person moving into poorly lit retirement housing and struggling to navigate in the dark from the bedroom to the bathroom. With Caseta, such concerns are a thing of the past, thanks to the Pico remote waiting on the bedside table to turn on the appropriate lights for safe travel. Safety and convenience are at the heart of what Caseta offers.

Check out the Caseta Kits, now available to an easy worry free start to lighting controls.
