COPPER CONNECTORS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

13th September 2017

How did copper connectors evolve over time to accommodate the 21st century technology?

Copper network systems have been the standard for structured cabling and infrastructure solutions to date. Although technologies have continued to advance, copper systems are a reliable and powerful way to interconnect a network in different residential, commercial, and industrial environments.

With the shift in technology and manufacturers developing new proprietary technology, contractors and end users cannot afford missing on products that satisfy their project requirements. Verified performance and reliability are necessary for mission critical networks, while needing a simple installation method.

Electrical Contractors are entering the world of Data Communications

Alongside this shift, more electrical contractors and technicians are broadening their experience by working on data specific networks which has been left to Data Comm technicians in the past. With the integration of IP technologies becoming more commonplace, contractors must have knowledge of the copper connectivity realm.

What trends are causing shifts in copper connectors?

1. Network Scalability and Versatility

Every environment now is becoming dependent on network connections because of active devices that require network information. Residential modems, commercial POS systems, and industrial control equipment are all part of a connected network.

2. Toolless termination

The introduction of networks and IP technology and becoming common across industries has put electrical contractors out of their typical comfort zone. Copper Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable and fiber optics are becoming commonly used among projects and specifications with new work and retrofit applications.

Leviton has released the Atlas-X1 UTP and shielded connector system which offers tool-free termination for simplified installations. The innovative wire manager and door-release lever support the industry’s fastest toolless termination and re-termination for easy and predictable installations, time savings, and reduced labor costs.

This shift will drive the need to have unified technology across different copper connectors categories as well as future technologies that will become standard. Toolless termination is becoming the new common practice for terminating copper connectors; it reduces cost and training time for electrical and data technicians.

E.B. Horsman & Son provides specification and training programs that focus on helping customers and end users with Leviton Atlas toolless connectors:

Checklist

Special Environmental Conditions

Assess jobsite needs and make a note of how many cameras need to be vibration resistant, high impact, hazardous, extreme temperature, etc.

What Needs to be Monitored?

Decide on a final number of cameras required. Once the camera locations are identified, EBH or Opticom can assist with selecting the right camera for each location.

Picking the Right Camera

Decide on the type of system that’s best suited for the application. Again, EBH or Opticom is available to assist with the selection process.

  • Coax (analog) or Network? Both types of system provide high quality video with complete network access.
  • Who will maintain the system? A network (IP) system will require onsite IT personnel, whereas an analog system can be easily serviced and maintained by electrical staff.

Cabling Infrastructure

The Opticom camera systems are flexible with cabling infrastructure. If upgrading to HD-TVI from a traditional analog solution, no cabling infrastructure change is needed. HD-TVI utilizes the existing coax cable and connectors without the need of installing Cat5e/Cat6 cable. All you need to do is change the cameras and the DVR.

Monitoring

  • Are you going to be monitoring at stations throughout your facility or will you have one main monitor back at the head end?
  • Do you require a video feed with no latency?

Datacom HOME OFFICE ESSENTIALS

April 21, 202

Datacom products are recommended by our experts for fast, secure, reliable, & professional video conferencing

As many companies adopt work-from-home policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be increasingly important that their employees have a properly set up home office to maintain outputs and efficiencies. This is an opportunity for residential contractors to offer value-added service and recommend products, like the ones featured here, that will ensure stability, provide a foundation for IoT innovation and secure a positive future as a modern, mobile workforce.

Key Features of a Properly Set Up Home Office

Internet speed must be fast: Not only is a slow internet connection frustrating, but it will also hinder productivity.

Secure Connection: Cybersecurity is a growing issue, as more employees work from home and are handling sensitive company information. A cyber threat might not just be dollars lost, but may also result in lost data, resource failures, and even public reputation damage, which may cost you business.

Reliable: A strong and reliable connection will prevent latency and freezing, especially during video calls.

Professional: The right up-to-date technology allows for a professional work space wherever you are.

Suggestions On How You Can Optimize Your Customer’s Home Office

Suggest modifying or upgrading their LAN?

  • The older the wireless LAN hardware becomes the more susceptible it becomes to threats and will eventually reach its end of support, resulting at the end of over-the-air security updates and notifications.
  • Hard-wired connections are typically faster than Wi-Fi signals and are safer when it comes to cybersecurity
  • If the household is being over-utilized by the number of users on the Wi-Fi system, being hardwired will overcome many of the concerns with a poor or weak signal.
  • OTHER OPTION: Suggest that customers upgrade for faster service from their ISP (internet service provider) or a separate connection if speed and security are a major concern.

Switch to a plastic media enclosure?

  • Suggest that they replace their metal enclosure for a plastic one. This switch will offer an outstanding WiFi performance increase. You can also suggest retrofitting their existing Leviton metal enclosure to support stronger wireless signals by adding a plastic cover or plastic hinged door.

  Add additional access points?

  • Additional wireless access points can add benefits by expanding the WiFi signal for full house coverage to prevent “dead zone” areas that are sporadic, weak, or have no signal or coverage.

Is the current ethernet equipment dated?

  • Suggest an upgrade to a Gigabit Ethernet switch which can support a 1000Mbps data rate, which improves the reliability and functionality of a home network especially if there are multiple users accessing the same network device.
  • Gigabit Ethernet will provide more total bandwidth to go around, which in turn results in less congestion and better overall performance.
  • Gigabit Ethernet is also helpful when large file transfers are involved, like when you perform backups over the network to a server.

Is the Wi-Fi equipment obsolete or improperly located?

  • Suggest that outdated products be upgraded, recommend proper placement, and configure equipment so the customer has a streamlined solution that is worry-free.

COPPER CONNECTORS

Data Communications

What are Copper Connections?

There are many forms of connections depending on the material used to carry the signal from one device to another. This usually depends on speed, bandwidth, and network requirement. In the case of copper connections, copper is used to carry a signal within a limited distance and bandwidth.

Although it is limited, it remains the most commonly used form of connection compared to fiber or ethernet. Why, you ask? It is the most economical option and it already exists in many networks. Also, despite its limitations in terms of distance, bandwidth, and signal disruption, manufacturers have done well in finding ways to improve its performance by increasing the capacity of unshielded and shielded twisted-pairs (UTP and STP).

Top Challenges & Solutions

1. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI):

Challenge: Environments with a lot of machinery produce EMI, which interferes with copper signals.

Solution: In that case, shielded twisted-pair (STP) is required to minimize signal disruption from EMI. Another option is choosing fiber optic connectors as it not disrupted by EMI.

2. Termination method

Challenge: There are many different methods to terminate copper connectors depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, electricians and data technicians spend more time training and terminating connectors in different methods.

Solution: Selecting a tooless copper connector with a unified termination method across all connectors types such as the Leviton Atlas-X.

3. Re-terminating Copper Connectors

Challenge: Once a copper connector has been terminated, it cannot be reused or re-terminated if it wasn’t terminated properly. This adds cost and time to customers.

Solution: There are a handful of copper connectors, such as the Atlas-X1, that can be re-terminated because there is no direct impact on the contact zone.

4. Quality & Longevity

Challenge: Many people choose offshore products for their low cost but they are also lower in quality; they usually don’t meet the network standards, speed, or bandwidth. Therefore, they often end up failing resulting in a shorter product life.

Solution: CSA and TIA approved products are recommended to meet quality and network standards. Also, these products tend to have a longer product life.

Copper Connections Checklist

Is it a new install or retrofit?

It is always easier to instal a new copper connection, but when installing a retrofit, the existing network becomes the limiting factor. For example, it is useless to install a CAT6A copper connector in a network with CAT5E because the signal would not be stronger than what the CAT5E offers. Talk to our EBH Data Comm experts to learn how to upgrade your network.

Network Environment

Different copper connectors are built for different industry types. Basic CAT5E UTP is recommended for residential applications. For stable industrial and commercial environments, CAT6A is recommended but CAT6 can also be used depending on application. If environment has EMI exposure, shielded twisted-pair (STP) is recommended.

Security requirement on-site

End-customer’s security policies determine if the site can have LAN connectivity or cellular connection and which is required. Most challenging part of industrial remote access is meeting site’s firewall requirements. Regardless, we have a solution for each security requirement.

Distance Requirement

A repeater or another active component is required to amplify the signal for distances greater than a 100 meters. It is recommended to consider other options such as fiber optics if distance is longer than 1km.

Future Proofing

One must not neglect future expansion plans. If expanding the network or plant might be considered later in the future, it might be worthwhile to choose copper connectors that would serve that expanded network so that you are not restricted later by existing bandwidth.

Project certification and warranty requirements

Some projects, such as government projects, require a 25 year warranty and/or certification to ensure network quality standards are being met. In this case, an end-to-end category rated system would be required.

Steps to Choosing your Copper Connector:

Step 1: Determine if you need a conducting shield or not:

  • Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP): Most commonly used and chosen by default.
  • Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP): Has a fine mesh covering the wires to isolate and protect the signal from dissipating — recommended for environments with EMI exposure
  • Industrial Copper Connectors

Step 2: Choose the connector category based on speed and bandwidth:

Category Speed Bandwidth
CAT5E 10Mb, 100Mb, 1,000Mb 100MHz
CAT6 10Mb, 100Mb, 1,000Mb 250MHz
CAT6A 10Mb, 100Mb, 1,000Mb, 10Gb 500MHz

Copper Connections are recommended for applications such as:

  • Internet Browsing
  • Media Sharing
  • IP Camera Networks
  • Machine-to-machine communication
  • Wireless networks
