How to Design the Best Office Lighting for Productivity

Productivity isn’t just impacted by staff’s energy levels, motivation, or community at work. In fact, lighting can play a significant role in productivity.

Well-designed office lighting systems can actually increase productivity by up to 20%! Thoughtful design and lighting ergonomics can make a big difference.

Whether you’re a commercial property manager or a business owner, here are a few ways anyone can use optimal lighting design techniques to support productivity in commercial office spaces.

How Office Lighting Impacts Productivity

On an individual level, productivity is impacted by a wide range of factors, including such as taking well-calculated breaks, propertly prioritizing tasks, and regular exercise and a healthy diet.

But beyond individual motivations, improper lighting conditions can have adverse effects on your staff’s proper productivity levels. Poor lighting, such as glare or insufficient light, can contribute to health problems, decrease workers’ well-being, and lower their cognitive function. No building manager or office owner wants that.

That’s why it’s important to ensure your offices are well-lit and optimized for productivity. Here are five key design tips to start the process.

5 Essential Office Lighting Design Tips

1. Maximize Natural Light

First thing’s first: maximize your natural light. (This can reduce office workers’ eyestrain and headaches by 84%.)

Start by maximizing natural light from windows and skylights, or by incorporating light-coloured or reflective surfaces, such as white walls, glass partitions, and mirrored finishes.

You can also add light shelves, which are horizontal surfaces installed near windows that reflect daylight deeper into a building.

Ultimately, heavy curtains, blinds, and tall furniture can block light, so try to keep the areas surrounding windows clear.

2. Optimize Task Lighting

Next, focus on task lighting.

Consider installing desk lamps and task lights above work surfaces to minimize glare and shadows. That way, employees can adjust the brightness and colour temperature to their needs. In conference rooms, consider installing overhead pendant lights, adjustable task lighting to tables, and floor lamps for collaborative spaces.

3. Minimize Glare

Now it’s time to reduce excessive glare.

Glare from overhead lights and screens can cause headaches and eyestrain, impacting your workers health and well-being, which can impact morale and reduce overall productivity levels.

To avoid this, use indirect lighting fixtures, and position screens away from direct light sources. You can also use diffusers or shields on overhead fixtures to distribute light more evenly.

4. Opt for Adjustable Controls

Now, consider adjustable lighting controls

These and other smart office lighting solutions allow employees to dim or brighten overhead lights, adjust colour temperature, or control task lighting as they see fit.

These options are especially valuable for hybrid or shared work spaces. Adjustable lighting can not only improve your workers’ sense of comfort, but can reduce unnecessary energy costs too.

Consider installing dimmers to adjust brightness levels throughout the day, as well as tunable white lighting systems to customize colour temperature and mimic natural daylight.

5. Prioritize Energy Efficiency with LEDs

Lastly, prioritize LED.

LEDs use significantly less electricity, need fewer replacements, lower utility bills, reduce maintenance costs over time, and offer many other benefits

But not only is this beneficial from a cost-savings perspective, by upgrading to tunable white LEDs that adjust colour temperature, your office can mimic natural changes in daylight and promote alertness during midday hours.

The Truth about Charging an Electric Car: Cost and Time Considerations

EV charging banner

In recent years, electric cars have surged in popularity as more people recognize the importance of sustainable transportation solutions. One of the most significant factors contributing to this trend is the increasing availability and accessibility of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. However, despite the growing convenience of charging stations, many prospective EV owners still have questions about the cost and time involved in charging their vehicle’s battery.

Are you considering getting an electric car but want to know more about costs and time? Read on and learn more about the details.

Electric Car Charging Basics

Electric cars typically come with different battery capacities, ranging from small batteries to larger ones. The battery capacity directly impacts both the charging time and cost.

When it comes to charging an electric car, there are primarily three types of charging:

  • Level 1 Charging: This involves plugging your EV into a standard household outlet using the provided charging cable. Level 1 charging is the slowest method and is often used for overnight charging at home. It typically adds around 3-8 kilometers of range per hour of charging.
  • Level 2 Charging: Level 2 chargers are more powerful and can be installed at home or found in public charging stations. These chargers use a 240-volt power source, allowing for faster charging rates. Depending on the EV model and the charger’s power output, Level 2 charging can add anywhere from 16 to 50 kilometers of range per hour.
  • DC Fast Charging (Level 3): DC fast chargers are the quickest option available, capable of adding significant range to an EV in a short amount of time. These chargers are commonly found along highways and public facilities such as gas stations or recreation centres. They can replenish an EV’s battery to 160+ kilometers of range in as little as 30 minutes, making them ideal for long-distance travel.

EV charging time diagram

Cost of Charging an Electric Car

If you are an EV owner, you would charge your electric vehicle at home by using either a standard wall outlet or a Level 2 charger that is installed specifically for this purpose. These charging methods draw power from your home’s electricity, and the additional cost for charging at home is reflected in your regular electricity bill. However, because electricity costs are typically lower compared to the current price of gasoline, the yearly energy expenses for operating an electric vehicle are considerably reduced.

In addition to home charging, there are options for charging on the go:

  1. Free Charging: Many businesses and institutions provide complimentary on-site charging facilities for their customers and staff.
  2. Public Charging Infrastructure: Municipalities throughout Canada are continuously enhancing the EV charging infrastructure in public areas such as parks, community centers, and along roadways, making it more convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles.
  3. Fee-Based Charging: Fee-based charging stations are prevalent across North America. These stations are managed by EV charging network operators, offering electricity to EV owners for a fee. The charging options typically include:
    1. Time-Based Fee
    2. Flat Fee
    3. Per-kWh Billing
    4. Hybrid Models

Drive towards a brighter future

As electric cars continue to gain traction, understanding the cost and time involved in charging is essential for both current and prospective EV owners. However, the advantages of zero-emission driving make it a valuable investment for the future of transportation.

If you are considering becoming an EV owner, get in touch with our experts to get the option that will meet your needs.

A Zero-Emissions Roadmap With Charge Forward

The Canadian government is determined to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To reach this goal, they aim to make all new light-duty vehicles emissions-free by 2035. As part of this effort, the government has already invested over $1 billion to establish a coast-to-coast network of changing stations in local communities.

Currently, there are more than 7,000 public charging stations with over 20,000 charging ports available throughout Canada.

Canada is expected to deploy more than 80,000 new EV charging stations by 2027.

This number is expected to grow in the future due to the government’s continued inverstment in charging infrastructure, incentives, and tax credits to encourage consumers to purchase zero-emission vehicles, and investing in research and development.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast – Albrite Lighting https://ebhorsman.com/product-spotlights/5-tips-for-choosing-the-right-lighting-ballast/ Tue, 04 Jul 2023 20:02:12 +0000 https://ebhorsman.com/uncategorized/need-to-heat-your-patio-check-out-bromics-heaters/ Sourcing a ballast can be overwhelming. Here’s a detailed guide on how to choose the right lighting ballast for your building.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast

Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast

Put simply, ballasts do two main things in regulating and maintaining the performance of fluorescent and high-density discharge (HID) lamps: they start lamps and control lamp operations.

But before choosing a ballast, it’s important to know about the different types.

  • Magnetic ballasts: Traditional and robust, these ballasts are commonly used with older fluorescent lighting fixtures. They tend to be less energy efficient than other types of ballasts, however, and can produce flickering and humming sounds.
  • Electronic ballasts: More energy-efficient and offering better lamp performance than magnetic ballasts, these are suitable for a wide range of applications. They’re often used with newer fluorescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) fixtures.
  • Digital ballasts: The most advanced type, these provide superior control and efficiency, especially for high-intensity lighting applications.
  • LED Drivers: If your building has LED lighting fixtures, you’ll need LED drivers instead of traditional ballasts. These electronic devices regulate the power supply to LED lights. They’re energy-efficient, have long lifespans, and offer dimming capabilities. LED drivers come in different types, such as constant current drivers and constant voltage drivers, selected based on the specific LED fixtures you have.

Next, it’s important to consider energy efficiency. Look for ballasts with the ENERGY STAR® symbol, as they meet internationally recognized standards for energy efficiency. Ballasts with this symbol consume less energy, emit less heat, and have a longer lifespan than ballasts without. You can also select ballasts that are compatible with energy-saving lamps, such as LED tubes, to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Before choosing ballasts, check your lamp types. Different ballasts are designed for different lamp types, such as T5, T8, or T12 fluorescent lamps and HID lamps. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s specifications for recommended lamp types and wattages. Using the correct ballast enhances lamp life, reduces flickering, and maintains consistent lighting levels.

Many ballasts are compatible with dimming systems. So if your residential or commercial building has advanced lighting control features, select dimming ballasts that meet these needs. Dimming helps save energy, creates ambiance, and improves occupant comfort.

Your ballast is only as good as the brand you source it from. Here at Albrite and E.B. Horsman & Son, you can trust that we only supply ballasts from outstanding manufacturers like Signify, Philips, Lutron, Leviton, and others.

Choosing from a well-known, reliable brand makes your work easier by keeping maintenance and longevity in mind. Once you pick your brand of choice, look for ballasts that offer easy installation, have a long operational life, require minimal maintenance, and offer warranty options.

Here is a guide for Philips Lamp, (LED & Traditional), Ballasts and Drivers.

Common FAQs

Our customers often need ballasts for their specific use cases. If you’re a property manager for a residential or commercial building or a purchasing agent for a nationwide chain—like many of our customers—here are some additional factors to consider.

Choosing the right ballasts for your building depends on several factors, including the type of lighting fixtures you have, your energy-efficiency goals, and your budget.

But in general, electronic ballasts are a great choice for energy-conscious residential buildings. They provide better light quality, reduce flickering, and eliminate humming noises, keeping your residents happy.

Many of our customers are purchasing agents for commercial chains. If this sounds like you, make sure to:

  • Understand your building’s requirements: Consider the type and quantity of fixtures, wattage requirements, and any specific features or compatibility requirements.
  • Research and compare: Learn about the different lighting ballast options, and compare their specifications, features, energy efficiency ratings, and pricing. Sound overwhelming? Don’t worry—our team can help you narrow it down!
  • Comply with regulations: Ensure that your ballasts comply with electrical safety standards, environmental regulations, and energy-efficiency requirements in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, or wherever your building is located.
  • Consider future building expansions or upgrades: To accommodate future expansion or upgrades to your buildings’ lighting systems, consider ballasts that are flexible and compatible with a range of lighting fixtures. This can help save money down the road by streamlining future retrofitting projects and minimizing compatibility issues.

What’s the Difference Between Level 1, 2, and 3 EV chargers in Canada?

Watti, Siemens and Leviton chargers banner

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly more popular, yet a recent survey found one of the biggest challenges for drivers is the lack of charging stations when they’re on the go!

To address this, the B.C. government recently announced $26 million in new funding to be spent across the province for public EV charging stations. But this isn’t just happening across B.C.—cities like Edmonton are installing new EV charging stations, while advocates are pushing for more stations across Saskatchewan.

To keep up with the changing times, ensure that you have the most suitable EV charging stations installed in your buildings

EV charging stations offer many benefits for your business, such as:

  • Attracting more customers who own EVs
  • Promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility
  • Improving employee retention, if your staff members own EVs
  • Future-proofing your business as demand for EV charging increases

But not all chargers are created equal. Read on to explore the differences between the three levels of EV chargers, and to determine which charger to use where, and when.

The Different EV Charging Options in Canada

Whether you’re looking for an EV charger for yourself, or for your residential or commercial buildings, you’ll need to know the differences between chargers to choose.

In Canada, there are three levels of EV chargers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Each level differs in charging speed, cost, and equipment.

Level 1 EV Chargers

Level 1 EV chargers are the slowest and most basic type. They use a standard 120-volt household outlet,  a J1772 standard connector,  and can charge an EV at a rate of about 5 km of range per hour. It can take up to 24 hours to fully charge an EV, depending on battery size.

This level is ideal for drivers who have a low daily driving range, or who don’t have access to Level 2 or 3 chargers. It’s typically used for overnight charging at home or in a workplace.

The most common type of EV charger is Level 2, which provides a faster charging rate than Level 1. Level 2 chargers—known for their convenience and speed—use a 240-volt AC power supply, which can charge an EV at a rate of about 40 km of range per hour, and a J1772 standard connector on the other end. They take around four to eight hours to fully charge an electric car, depending on battery size.

These chargers are often found in workplaces, public parking garages, and some residential settings. They’re for drivers who need a faster charging rate, or who don’t have access to a Level 3 charger.

Level 3 EV Chargers

Also known as DC fast chargers, Level 3 EV chargers are the fastest and most expensive option. They use a 480-volt DC plug, which can charge an EV at a rate of up to 200 km of range per hour, and a CCS or CHAdeMO connector.

These chargers are typically found along highways, at rest stops, and in urban areas where quick charging is needed. Depending on battery size and the station’s capacity, they can charge an EV in just 30 minutes! Level 3 charging stations often require payment or membership to use.

Level 2 EV charger vs. Level 3 EV charger

Level 2 chargers convert AC is converted to DC on the onboard charger, supplying DC power to the battery.

Level 3 chargers convert AC to DC within the charger itself, supplying DC power directly to the battery.

Which Type of EV Charger Should I Install?

The level of EV charger you choose for yourself, your customers, or your tenants should be based on the charging capabilities and needs of the EVs, and the number of charging stations.

Note: not all vehicles are capable of charging at all three levels. Check your vehicle’s specifications to determine which level you’ll need.

What type of EV charger should I use for my single-family home?

There are several factors to consider, but typically your best option will be a faster Level 2 charger such as the Watti Electric Avenue EV charger

Level 2 chargers need a 240-volt electrical supply, so you’ll require a licensed electrician for installation. These chargers can be mounted on a wall or installed on a pedestal, and are compatible with most EVs.

Many Level 2 chargers also have Wi-Fi, so you can monitor charging and energy usage remotely, in tandem with smart charging and scheduling functions!

I’m a property manager. What type of EV charger should I use in multi-unit residential buildings?

Level 2 EV chargers, like Siemens third-generation VersiCharge, are your best option for multi-unit residential buildings. They charge up to six times faster than a Level 1 charger and are easy to use, and compatible with most EVs.

If you don’t want to install permanent charging infrastructure, portable chargers are another great choice! Ease and portability make this particularly useful for buildings with minimal parking spaces, as tenants can share them.

Consider these factor before choosing a Level 2 charger for your residential building:

  • Number of parking spaces
  • Charging requirements of EV owners in the building
  • Availability of electrical infrastructure

Installing Level 2 chargers in multi-unit residential buildings can be more complex than in a single-family home. You might need to work with licensed electricians and EV-charger installation experts to determine the appropriate electrical capacity, location, and charging configuration.

It’s also crucial to choose EV chargers that are compatible with a variety of EV models, and that can withstand high-traffic charging. Many manufacturers offer commercial-grade Level 2 chargers designed for multi-unit residential buildings and public charging locations.

I’m a business owner. What type of EV charger should I use for my commercial space?

Level 2 chargers are also the best option for commercial spaces, since they provide a higher charging rate than Level 1, and are more affordable than Level 3. You will likely wish to install multiple charging stations, in visible and easily accessible areas. We offer a variety of options, including EV charging stations from Leviton Canada, for residential and commercial use.

When selecting a charger for your commercial space, consider:

  •  Number of charging stations your customers and staff you’ll need, and
  • Available electrical infrastructure
  • Software used to manage the charging system, schedule, and usage

Every commercial building has different charging needs though. For example, retail stores might want to offer short-term charging options, while longer-duration chargers may do the trick for office buildings.

Flowers and candy are the staples of romance. This year, why not spark up your love life and not your tools?

Insulated tools are essential for electrical work and are used by electricians, technicians, and other professionals who work with live electrical circuits. These tools are also commonly used in industrial and construction settings where electrical hazards are present. These tools play a key role in creating a safe workplace for you and your employees who work near energized circuits. Did you know E.B. Horsman carries an assortment of Klein premium insulated tools that can withstand 1000 volts, now that is a lot of sparks?

There are a wide variety of insulated tools available, including screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, and wrenches. Insulated tools are also available in different sizes and styles to suit different tasks and applications. Some insulated tools are designed for specific uses, such as insulated lineman pliers that are used to work on high voltage electrical lines.

The insulation on these tools is rated to withstand a certain level of voltage, and it is important to use the right tool for the job. Insulated tools are labeled with their voltage rating, so be sure you have the right tool that is rated for the voltage level of the circuit you will be working on.

Insulated Tools and the Toolbox

Insulated tools have an interesting history and manufacturing process, plus they look really unique with various color schemes and differing design that set them apart and makes it slightly easier to tell that they are insulated. It’s also really cool that they are a lifesaving technology and represent one of the best safety features that a tool can possess; it can protect you from an accidental electrical shock. Of course to make sure they actually DO protect you when the time comes, you need to take extra special care of your insulated tools, meaning they can’t just get chucked into the toolbox like a set of normal tools. This is where Klein tool bags come into play, with their many compartments and spots to keep them from getting damaged.

Whether you’re high in the sky working on power lines, elbow-deep in a generator, or re-wiring a critical piece of control equipment on the factory floor, electrical workers need tools that are designed and engineered for maximum safety. Once you have ensured your insulated tools are clean, dry, free of blemishes, and ready to use, the recommended use of an insulated tool usually stipulates that you power off the circuit BEFORE you start working on it. Even on a circuit that isn’t live, insulated tools should be used in case the circuit is unintentionally turned on. To prevent that, you might also wish to employ a lockout tag out to add an extra layer of safety. Every insulated tool must be marked with the year it was insulated and an official 1,000-volt rating symbol, which ensures you will be protected for live use up to 1,000 VAC or 1,500 VDC.

Overall, insulated tools are an essential part of any electrician’s or technician’s toolkit. They help to protect the user from electrical shock and also help to prevent damage to the tools themselves. It is important to use the right tool for the job and to ensure that the tool is rated for the voltage level of the circuit you will be working on.

EV Charging 101: What Property Managers Need To Know

Soaring gas prices and climate change have led to increasing demand for electrical vehicles (EVs) in recent years. If you’re looking for EV charging stations and chargers for your strata buildings or other residential property, AlbriteLighting can help you find the right solutions.

When did you last update your outdoor and landscape lighting? It might be time for an energy-efficient upgrade that helps keep people and your property safe.

EV Charging Station Options

When it comes to EV products, you have choices! We can help you navigate this growing market to find the right fit.

Below is a brief overview of the three different types of EV charging stations. It’s important to be aware of all three, but most property managers require a Level 2 charging station, depending on the building size and number of EV drivers.

Level 1 Charging

120V – slow charge

  • Residential use
  • Installation cost: plug typically comes free with EV purchase
  • Charge time: 8–24 hours
  • Uses as much power as a space heater
  • Plugs into a standard outlet

Level 2 Charging

208 to 240V – AC fast charging

  • Residential or business use
  • Installation cost: $500–$2,500
  • Charge time: 4–10 hours
  • Uses as much power as a clothes dryer
  • Electrician needed to install station

Level 3 Charging

480V – DC fast charging

  • Business use
  • Installation cost: $50,000–$100,000
  • Charge time: 30–45 minutes
  • These pay-per-use charging stations are typically for public use

Leviton

With its Evr-Green line, Leviton offers complete EV charging solutions, including Level 2 non-networked residential and commercial chargers, accessories such as surge protection panels and mounting holsters, and network software.

Evr-Green 4000

  • Partnership with ChargePoint Network Services
  • Available with Wi-Fi for networking with external providers
  • Stations can activate optional access control, preventing unauthorized use with RFID cards
  • Allows to control the EV charger through an app

Electric Avenue

Retrofitting the parking area of an existing multi-unit residential building for EV charging can be expensive and challenging, but we’re here to help.

Many local governments now have policies requiring new residential buildings to provide energized outlets in residential parking stalls. If you’re a strata manager working with a new build, be sure to check in with your electricians or our team of experts to clarify the requirements in your community.

Watti EV charger

Need EV charging at home? The Electric Avenue Watti Home smart EV charger is perfect for small-scale residential use. Its Level 2 station charges any EV up to 40 amps with NEMA 14-50P, or up to 48 amps with hardwired installation. Benefits include:

  • Compatible with all EV manufacturers
  • Backed by a three-year warranty
  • Quick installation
  • Tracks and monitors energy use
  • Includes free app

Share the Load

Struggling with load management due to multiple EV charging stations in your building? Load sharing allows you to control the amount of electricity each EV charging station uses when multiple units are connected to the same circuit.

Want to learn more about implementing  load sharing? Ask us about the DIVVEE-40, by LoadShare Technologies Inc.. This multi-use loadshare device is an easy, affordable upgrade that’s ideal for residential EV chargers. It intercepts a 40-amp circuit in your electrical breaker panel – usually the range/oven breaker – to share the power supply with your EV charger. When the range turns on, DIVVEE shuts off the EV charger until the range stops, then automatically restarts the charger.

EV Charger Rebate Programs

British Columbia

BC Hydro’s EV charger rebate program offers rebates for the purchase and installation of EV chargers and infrastructure across the province., including for apartment and condo buildings. Read more about this program to find out if you’re eligible for a rebate. BC Hydro recently expanded its own EV charging network, and it has further expansion plans, with new sites popping up all the time across B.C.

FortisBC also offers rebates to its customers who purchase and install an EV charging station. Rebates are also available for multi-unit residential buildings and workplaces. Read more about the FortisBC program for eligibility, rebate details, and how to apply.

Ever Charger Rebates Across Canada

While federal rebate programs recently ended, and rebates are currently unavailable in Alberta and Saskatchewan, be sure to watch out for new provincial rebate programs rolling out as the EV market continues to grow. Some municipalities also offer EV charging rebates, so it’s a good idea to check what’s available in your location.

Dahua Thermal Camera System

The Dahua Network Security System offers a comprehensive video security solution, encompassing everything needed for swift installation, configuration, and effective utilization. These IP cameras deliver high-definition 8MP video quality, while the NVR incorporates advanced motion detection algorithms, alarm triggers, and customizable recording modes. Moreover, the NVR boasts user-friendly Plug and Play technology, enabling seamless connection with cameras within the same network. Additionally, each component is designed to be compatible with the PoE power supply, streamlining the installation process.
