What Electrical Equipment Do I Need to Power Large Outdoor Events? https://ebhorsman.com/industry-trends/electrical-equipment-to-power-large-outdoor-events/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 21:29:37 +0000 https://ebhorsman.com/?p=23829 Planning to power up a carnival, festival, fair, or large outdoor school event? Here’s an overview of the electrical equipment you’ll need.

The post What Electrical Equipment Do I Need to Power Large Outdoor Events? appeared first on E.B. Horsman & Son.

]]>
Warmer weather is here, and festivals, fairs, and carnivals are in full swing.

Whether you’re a contractor working on a large outdoor event, or an organizer, follow these key steps to ensure the electrical power meets your needs and runs smoothly.

Preparing Your Electrical Equipment for an Outdoor Event

Step 1: Understand The Space

Before you power up a large outdoor event, it’s important to know the venue.

First, identify the size of the space, the number of attendees, and the likely power requirements for your lighting, sound, and safety needs. If you don’t have exact attendee numbers, err on the side of caution and assume there will be more participants rather than fewer. If possible, visit the site in person to get a first-hand look at the space.

Also, ensure you get a timetable of the event. That way, you can identify how much power you need at each time to avoid an electrical overload.

Step 2: Identify What You Need

The exact equipment you’ll need depends on the event’s size and scope, but here’s a general overview of the solutions available.

Temporary Power Distribution Systems

Without a doubt, you will need a generator. We recommend this BE Power Equipment generator or this portable backup generator with inverter. These will keep uninterrupted power flowing smoothly.

You may also need a portable power station. We recommend this one by Southwire

And don’t forget to stock up on reliable batteries—you’ll need those, too!

Power Cables and Extension Cords

You’ll need plenty of power cables and sturdy extension cords, depending on your specific event’s requirements. This 50′ cable and this 100′ cable by Southwire are reliable options.

Don’t forget about cable protectors and other wire management supplies. Protect your cables to keep the event running smoothly and safely.

Lighting Equipment

You may also require lighting, depending on the time of day and other factors. Consider string lights, spotlights, and lamps to illuminate pathways and poorly lit areas.

For event personnel, keep flashlights and headlamps on hand. This Klein Tools flashlight and this Rack-A-Tiers rechargeable headlamp are great choices!

Portable Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)

Designed for easy transport, portable GFCIs are a must-have for safety at large outdoor events. These compact devices help mitigate shocks and short circuits, ensuring that your event runs safely.

Either plug them into existing non-GFCI outlets, or connect with a cord and plug. These GFCIs include a no-voltage release device that disconnects power to outlets if a supply conductor opens. The ones designed specifically for outdoor use come in enclosures, but if you’re expecting rain at the event, make sure they’re waterproof.

Additional Considerations

This is just an introduction to help you get the lay of the land. You’ll likely need other products, such as cable ramps or environmentally friendly power choices. Check out our previous blog on the best products for summer adventures for more ideas.

Step 3: Set Up

Once you’ve determined the event’s requirements and what you need, it’s time to set up. Preparation is key to a flawless power setup, and we’re here to ensure your event goes off without a hitch.

You can shop our products online, visit one of our nearest locations, or contact our talented team. Let’s get this party started!

When he finally had enough points, he didn’t pick something for himself. Instead, he chose a company BBQ. With his new BBQ, Mike turned ordinary days into something special. Every month, he gathers his team in the yard behind their office to enjoy good food and each other’s company.

Alex, an electrician and frequent customer of RAB Products, had been diligently accumulating E.B. Horsman Reward points with each purchase of lighting solutions from RAB. As his son’s birthday neared, Alex saw an opportunity to use his points for something special. When the time came to redeem his points, Alex chose an iPad as the perfect gift for his son. The thought of the joy it would bring filled him with excitement. With his decision made, Alex looked forward to making his son’s birthday celebration truly memorable

Ava, a lighting specialist with a keen eye for illuminating spaces, has long been a customer of Signify. With each purchase, she collected points for the E.B. Horsman’s rewards program, but her intentions extended far beyond personal gain.

Ava wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. As her points amassed, she saw an opportunity to turn her purchases into something meaningful. When Ava finally reached the milestone of redeeming her points, she decided to spread light in a different way. She used her points to donate $300 to the BC Children’s Hospital. 5 Electrical Projects That School Facility Managers Should Do For Spring https://ebhorsman.com/industry-trends/5-electrical-projects-that-school-facility-managers-should-do-during-spring-break/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 17:10:32 +0000 https://ebhorsman.com/?p=22406 There are a number of projects to tackle in your school building over spring break—here are a few places to start.

The post 5 Electrical Projects That School Facility Managers Should Do For Spring appeared first on E.B. Horsman & Son.

]]>
Ah, spring. The time for a holiday and break from your work.

…If you’re a student, that is.

But if you’re a school facilities manager, your work might just be ramping up—especially when it comes to electrical projects. That’s because spring offers a unique window of opportunity to get any nagging projects done—while the weather is sunny, but not too hot.

Here’s a list of five electrical spring-time projects you can complete.

Project #1: Lighting Audits

Before doing any updates at your school, conduct a lighting audit to see what needs to be done and to set priorities straight. You can even complete your audit before spring to ensure you’re prepared when spring rolls around.

Here are some tips on where to begin:

 • Check lighting inventory. Start by putting together a detailed list of all lighting fixtures, noting their types and locations.
 • Evaluate existing technology. Assess the school’s lighting technology, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability.
 • Collaborate with maintenance staff. Coordinate with maintenance staff to address immediate concerns and ensure safety compliance.
 • Measure lighting levels. Check lighting levels in different areas of the school to identify spaces that could use more or less light.
 • Inspect control systems. Ensure lighting controls, including sensors and timers, are working properly.
 • Draft your recommendations. Put together a detailed report outlining your recommendations to improve lighting and reduce energy consumption.
 • Make a plan. Develop an action plan for during and after spring break.

All this being said, conducting a lighting audit requires meticulous planning. Get in touch if you need support—we can help every step of the way

Project #2: Lighting Retrofits

Spring is short, so you’ll need to identify priorities for any lighting retrofits.

Upgrading existing lighting systems to more energy-efficient alternatives such as LED lights can cut operational costs, reduce energy usage, and support the environment. Enhancing your school’s lighting also creates a better learning environment for students—which makes your job more rewarding!

Here are some lighting retrofit ideas:

 • Upgrade to LEDs. Spring break is a great opportunity to make the switch to cost-saving LEDs, which will soon become mandatory in Canada
 • Set occupancy sensors. Install occupancy sensors, such as these ones from Lutron. This will optimize energy usage in classrooms and other spaces when students and staff are away.
 • Harvest daylight. Use daylight harvesting systems if this is an option for your school. You can adjust artificial lighting levels based on the availability of natural daylight to be more energy efficient.
 • Add smart lighting controls. Centralize lighting management and scheduling to optimize energy usage during school hours with timers and dimmers.
 • Assess lighting design. Identify areas with over- or under-lit spaces, and explore lighting design solutions to ensure an efficient distribution of light throughout each building.
 • Upgrade emergency lighting. Enhance emergency lighting systems—including exit sign upgrades—with modern, energy-efficient options. This ensures you’re meeting safety compliance and reduces long-term maintenance costs.
 • Use energy-efficient bulbs. Replace outdated bulbs with energy-efficient alternatives, such as LEDs, across the facility to improve overall efficiency.
 • Explore energy rebate programs. Get to know energy rebate programs in your area that offset the costs of lighting retrofits along with other ways to cut back on energy costs.

Project #3: HVAC Upgrades

Upgrading and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can improve both energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Following COVID-19 and amidst pesky flu season, maintaining high-quality ventilation is even more crucial to keeping people healthy.

Here are some HVAC projects you can take on during spring:

 • Inspect the HVAC systems. Assess the school’s existing HVAC systems to identify any inefficiencies or maintenance needs.
 • Replace air filters. One of the best ways to ensure top system performance and improve indoor air quality by reducing dust and allergens is to regularly replace air filters.
 • Upgrade thermostats. Switching to programmable or smart thermostats allows you to control temperature settings while saving energy and money.
 • Inspect and seal ductwork. Repair any leaks or gaps in ductwork to prevent energy wastage and maintain consistent airflow.
 • Upgrade HVAC units. Replace outdated HVAC units with more energy-efficient models to reduce energy consumption and operational costs.
 • Monitor indoor air quality. Take this opportunity to set up indoor air quality monitoring systems to address ventilation concerns on an ongoing basis and ensure a healthy school environment.
 • Upgrade ventilation systems. Your school’s ventilation systems should meet or exceed recommended standards to promote proper air exchange and reduce the risk of indoor pollutants.
 • Consider adding energy recovery ventilators. These systems capture and reuse heat or cool air, improving overall energy efficiency.

Project #4: Electrical Safety Inspections

Inspecting electrical safety in schools is crucial year-round, but spring weather can give you the extra time you need to conduct more thorough checks.

The following inspections can help identify and address any electrical safety issues, update wiring, and replace faulty outlets or switches:

 • Inspect electrical panels. Check for signs of wear, loose connections, or overheating that could pose safety risks.
 • Assess wiring and conduit. Look for any damaged or exposed wiring or broken conduit.
 • Check outlets and switches. Ensure they’re working properly, aren’t overloaded, and are equipped with safety features like ground fault circuit interrupters.
 • Test emergency exit lighting. Inspect and test to ensure emergency lighting is up to speed in case of power outages or emergencies.
 • Confirm appliance and equipment safety. Check all electrical appliances and equipment, including cords, plugs, and connections to prevent fire hazards.
 • Inspect the electrical room. Electrical rooms should be organized and have clear access to panels and equipment. Safety protocols and signage should be clearly on display.
 • Evaluate the grounding system. Check the school’s grounding system to confirm it’s working properly by providing a path for electrical faults to dissipate safely.
 • Inspect fire alarms. Test the fire alarm system and electrical components to ensure they comply with safety regulations. Read more about other life safety systems to test regularly.

Project #5: Check your Datacom

Students, teachers, and administration rely heavily on technology, so ensuring up-to-date data communications at your school is vital.

Let’s take a look at what you might include in a thorough examination of datacom on school grounds. Though some of these items might be outside your scope of work, this list can help identify what needs to be done.

 • Examine network infrastructure. Inspect routers, switches, and cables, looking for signs of wear or degradation.
 • Verify Wi-Fi and internet connectivity. Check the functionality and coverage of Wi-Fi access points and the school’s internet connection speed and reliability.
 • Evaluate the VoIP system. Your school’s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system should have clear communication and be properly integrated with other datacom.
 • Inspect the security system. Check security cameras and access control systems to ensure they’re working and connected to the network.
 • Assess digital learning tools. Check the functionality of interactive whiteboards or tablets.
 • Review cloud services. Review the integration and accessibility of cloud services used for storing and accessing educational materials and data.
 • Check data backup systems. Ensure these systems are functioning correctly and that critical school data is backed up regularly.
 • Audit cybersecurity measures. Conduct an audit of firewalls and antivirus software.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast – Albrite Lighting https://ebhorsman.com/product-spotlights/5-tips-for-choosing-the-right-lighting-ballast/ Tue, 04 Jul 2023 20:02:12 +0000 https://ebhorsman.com/uncategorized/need-to-heat-your-patio-check-out-bromics-heaters/ Sourcing a ballast can be overwhelming. Here’s a detailed guide on how to choose the right lighting ballast for your building.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast

Tips for Choosing the Right Lighting Ballast

Put simply, ballasts do two main things in regulating and maintaining the performance of fluorescent and high-density discharge (HID) lamps: they start lamps and control lamp operations.

But before choosing a ballast, it’s important to know about the different types.

 • Magnetic ballasts: Traditional and robust, these ballasts are commonly used with older fluorescent lighting fixtures. They tend to be less energy efficient than other types of ballasts, however, and can produce flickering and humming sounds.
 • Electronic ballasts: More energy-efficient and offering better lamp performance than magnetic ballasts, these are suitable for a wide range of applications. They’re often used with newer fluorescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) fixtures.
 • Digital ballasts: The most advanced type, these provide superior control and efficiency, especially for high-intensity lighting applications.
 • LED Drivers: If your building has LED lighting fixtures, you’ll need LED drivers instead of traditional ballasts. These electronic devices regulate the power supply to LED lights. They’re energy-efficient, have long lifespans, and offer dimming capabilities. LED drivers come in different types, such as constant current drivers and constant voltage drivers, selected based on the specific LED fixtures you have.

Next, it’s important to consider energy efficiency. Look for ballasts with the ENERGY STAR® symbol, as they meet internationally recognized standards for energy efficiency. Ballasts with this symbol consume less energy, emit less heat, and have a longer lifespan than ballasts without. You can also select ballasts that are compatible with energy-saving lamps, such as LED tubes, to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Before choosing ballasts, check your lamp types. Different ballasts are designed for different lamp types, such as T5, T8, or T12 fluorescent lamps and HID lamps. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s specifications for recommended lamp types and wattages. Using the correct ballast enhances lamp life, reduces flickering, and maintains consistent lighting levels.

Many ballasts are compatible with dimming systems. So if your residential or commercial building has advanced lighting control features, select dimming ballasts that meet these needs. Dimming helps save energy, creates ambiance, and improves occupant comfort.

Your ballast is only as good as the brand you source it from. Here at Albrite and E.B. Horsman & Son, you can trust that we only supply ballasts from outstanding manufacturers like Signify, Philips, Lutron, Leviton, and others.

Choosing from a well-known, reliable brand makes your work easier by keeping maintenance and longevity in mind. Once you pick your brand of choice, look for ballasts that offer easy installation, have a long operational life, require minimal maintenance, and offer warranty options.

Here is a guide for Philips Lamp, (LED & Traditional), Ballasts and Drivers.

Common FAQs

Our customers often need ballasts for their specific use cases. If you’re a property manager for a residential or commercial building or a purchasing agent for a nationwide chain—like many of our customers—here are some additional factors to consider.

Choosing the right ballasts for your building depends on several factors, including the type of lighting fixtures you have, your energy-efficiency goals, and your budget.

But in general, electronic ballasts are a great choice for energy-conscious residential buildings. They provide better light quality, reduce flickering, and eliminate humming noises, keeping your residents happy.

Many of our customers are purchasing agents for commercial chains. If this sounds like you, make sure to:

 • Understand your building’s requirements: Consider the type and quantity of fixtures, wattage requirements, and any specific features or compatibility requirements.
 • Research and compare: Learn about the different lighting ballast options, and compare their specifications, features, energy efficiency ratings, and pricing. Sound overwhelming? Don’t worry—our team can help you narrow it down!
 • Comply with regulations: Ensure that your ballasts comply with electrical safety standards, environmental regulations, and energy-efficiency requirements in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, or wherever your building is located.
 • Consider future building expansions or upgrades: To accommodate future expansion or upgrades to your buildings’ lighting systems, consider ballasts that are flexible and compatible with a range of lighting fixtures. This can help save money down the road by streamlining future retrofitting projects and minimizing compatibility issues.

E.B. Horsman Cares is our community engagement program that supports local children’s hospitals, communities, and non-profit initiatives with donations, fundraising, volunteering, and scholarships. We are strongly committed and passionate to giving back to local communities in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

Giving back is one of our core company values, and our entire team, as well as many of our customer and supplier partners are engaged throughout the year in various initiatives to fundraise and give back to the communities that we serve. These initiatives include but are not limited to: silent auctions, chili cook-offs, sports pools, jeans day, food drives, cookbook sales and charity poker tournaments.

Everyone at E.B. Horsman helps make a difference through acts of giving; big and small. Our team is always finding new and creative ways to engage the community and have fun while raising money for Children’s Hospitals.

Supporting Children’s Hospitals Across Western Canada

BC Children’s Hospital

BC Children’s Hospital has been the primary recipient of E.B. Horsman & Son’s fundraising since 1993. At that time, E.B. Horsman & Son was primarily BC-based and chose to focus the majority of their corporate and fundraising efforts on a charity that would impact as many communities as possible across B.C. Regardless of their home base, many children from around the province are served by BC Children’s in Vancouver, as it’s the province’s only pediatric acute care hospital.

Children’s Hospitals in Alberta and Saskatchewan

As E.B. Horsman has continued to expand its businesses across Western Canada, we are simultaneously expanding our commitment to be a proud supporter of local Children’s Hospitals across Alberta, and Saskatchewan, and look forward to many years of developing our support for those hospitals as well.

Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation

With our expansion to Alberta in 2015, we started working with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation so that funds raised in Alberta benefited local families. The Stollery Children’s Hospital is a 150-bed facility in Edmonton that opened in October 2001.

Scholarship Programs:

At E.B. Horsman & Son, we believe that scholarships benefit students, families and communities. By taking some of the financial pressure off of students and families, we can enable greater success in post-secondary education and help deserving students who want to graduate and give back to society.

In addition, our scholarship programs help us cope with challenges surrounding talent management, succession planning and general market awareness in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Focused on Western Canada, the scholarships are available to students enrolled in technical programs that offer training in electrical, instrumentation or building technologies.

E.B. Horsman & Son demonstrates its dedication to its employees and future generations by providing financial support for post-secondary education via the H.G. Horsman scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to children of E. B. Horsman & Son employees who exhibit both academic proficiency and strong leadership ability in school, social and other activities, and who are entering their first year of post-secondary education at an accredited Canadian college, university or technical/trade school.

E.B. Horsman & Son is a proud supporter of the Electro Federation Canada (EFC) scholarship program. For more than two decades, EFC has been supporting university and college students in their pursuit of a career in the electrical industry. Every year, EFC awards in excess of $100,000 to more than 50 worthy recipients.

“I am absolutely thrilled to receive the E.B. Horsman & Son Scholarship Award,” said Trent Arnott, recipient of the E.B. Horsman EFC Scholarship 2015, “One of my instructors at BCIT explained that our class will be only 1% of the population in this important field. Our society is becoming ever-dependent on technology and alarmingly there are so few skilled people seeking careers in it. Scholarships encourage people to enter into the field of technology, and make it possible to focus on studying without financial stress. I would like to thank E.B. Horsman & Son for this Award, and would recommend youth to apply and get into the trades and technology.”

E.B. Horsman & Son is committed to support BCIT students throughout their enrollment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program’s Automation and Instrumentation option. Project Overview

In 2018, Vancouver’s Park Board and the City of Vancouver decided to give the Bloedel Conservatory atop Queen Elizabeth Park a more sustainable colour-changing LED lighting system. The goal was to attract more visitors, reduce the venue’s energy consumption, and lower maintenance costs through a remote, multi-locational lighting-control system.

Quantum Lighting teamed up with SLS Lighting, Mott Electric, and E.B. Horsman & Son to provide a new LED lighting system that would reduce the conservatory’s lighting energy consumption by 60% under the same hours of operation.

About the Bloedel Conservatory:

The Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park is one of Vancouver’s most iconic visitor attractions. Built in 1969, the geodesic-like dome attracts thousands of visitors from around the world each year, leaving a lasting impression of Vancouver’s beauty and splendour.

The conservatory is home to a resident population of more than 100 free-flying bird species, ranging from timbrado and roller canaries to yellow-crested Amazon parrots and Lady Amherst pheasants. The site also houses 500 species of plants from around the world including collections of fig trees, palms, exotic fruit and spice trees, cacti and tropical flowers/ornamentals.

The birds, plants, and trees are sensitive to light. Therefore, an effective, non-disruptive lighting system is crucial to help maintain a healthy habitat for all species within the tropical setting – and to ensure the site’s ongoing appeal to a global audience.

What Challenges did the City and the Park Board need to overcome?

1. Lighting System Cost-Management Challenge

The local Park Board, which operates and manages the City of Vancouver-owned conservatory, wanted to give the dome a modern appearance by installing new, colour-changing LED light fixtures and lamps. The City and Park Board accepted Quantum’s proposal on a less costly interior-lighting upgrade to the existing metal halide flood lighting.

2. Lighting Design ChallengeVancouver Park Board, City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver Botanical Garden Association wanted the dome’s new, modern appearance to use the latest, colour-changing LED light fixtures that could draw renewed attention to the public venue and increase its visitor numbers. A critical requirement was to have a system that would enable the City’s staff to easily create various-coloured light shows along the dome’s interior during special events or days.

3. Facility unique requirementsKeeping the facility’s sensitive habitat in mind, the City and the Park Board also required a lighting design that would provide slow, controlled colour changes to avoid distressing the birds. This eliminated any use of light shows with dynamic colour changes.

4. Energy-efficient lighting systemThe City also wanted to provide better lighting within the facility and to reduce the dome’s energy use for lighting by 60% while using the same hours of operation as the original lighting.

5. Technical lighting challengesThe City needed to install new colour-changing LED-light luminaires along the dome’s interior and have the lighting system compatible with LED lighting systems installed in other City facilities.

Color Kinetics at Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver
The desired solution was to graze the tubular frames of the dome’s windows, use the reflected light to illuminate the conservatory space, and direct the light across the windows. The LED-lighting package was designed and proposed by Quantum Lighting in conjunction with SLS Lighting, supplied by E.B. Horsman & Son, and installed by Mott Electric during a two-month period.

Designing the Conservatory’s New Lighting System

Quantum Lighting consulted the manufacturer agent, SLS Lighting, and proposed the ColorBlast system from Color Kinetics – a versatile LED-lighting control system, to achieve the City’s and park’s board objectives. “The uniqueness of the Color Kinetics system is the wiring capability of the power-core technology and Color Kinetics Data Enabler Pro controls; it allowed Mott’s electricians to use the existing wiring from the HID floodlights to lay out the new colour-changing fixtures around the base of the dome. This reduced the project installation costs significantly,” said Gerry Hogan, Quantum Lighting’s Senior Lighting Designer and Project Manager.

“Also, the City of Vancouver already had a Color Kinetics installation at their City Hall so introducing the use of the Ethernet controls for the Bloedel Conservatory provided an opportunity for the City staff to manage the colour-changing shows remotely for both sites.” – Horgan added.

Richard Tse, an Energy Analyst at the City of Vancouver, said the City of Vancouver chose to implement the Color Kinetics LED package in the dome because it would satisfy the City’s current and future needs, such as remote, internet-based access to the lighting-control system; a modern interface and user experience; and the opportunity to create, save, and manage a wide variety of shows and lighting schedules. The Color Kinetics LED package also met the required capability of managing multiple facilities from one interface, as well as permitted various user-access levels.

“Forty-two of the previous 150-watt floodlights were removed from the interior dome and 64 new colour LED fixtures installed,” said Richard Tse, an Energy Analyst at the City of Vancouver.

Overcoming the conservatory’s unique environment and habitat requirements?

Although the LED-lighting system was installed indoors, the conservatory’s humidity and other conditions simulate an outdoor environment. The ColorBlast’s outdoor rating was crucial to ensure the project’s success and the long-term effectiveness of the conservatory’s lighting system.

“The ColorBlast model was chosen for its lower energy requirements, outdoor rating for the harsh dome environment, and ability to produce superior saturated colors,” said Hogan.

He added: “The ColorBlast luminaire is reasonably priced compared to other LED colour-changing products in the industry.”

Supplying the Color Kinetics fixtures

Mott Electric, the company in charge of the installation, turned to their long-time electrical supplier, E.B. Horsman & Son. “E.B. Horsman & Son was chosen as the supplier for this project because “their price met the project’s budget and the company is very responsive, efficient, and reliable” said Jenna Brewer, Mott’s Estimator/Project Manager for the LED-lighting system installation at the conservatory.

“Furthermore, the company is easy to communicate with, experienced, and helpful and serves as a great resource for projects and estimating.” – added Brewer.

Established in Canada in 1900, E.B. Horsman & Son is the largest full-line electrical supplier in Western Canada with specialty divisions in lighting, automation and controls, process instrumentation, data communications and commercial projects.

“Having a dedicated projects team in-house allows us to support big projects such as the Bloedel Conservatory lighting upgrade from start to finish,” said Rob Baker, E.B. Horsman & Son’s Lower Mainland Commercial Sales Manager. “This particular project required 64 made-to-order fixtures compared to standard off-the-shelf orders.”

E.B. Horsman & Son coordinated the complete order’s delivery for mid-September and early October. The company worked with Signify, Colour Kinetics, and SLS Lighting, the manufacturer agent in BC, to arrange air freight rather than standard ground shipping to ensure that Mott Electric received the products on- time.

Installing Color Kinetics Fixtures along the Conservatory’s Dome

The conservatory had a unique dome structure compared to other facilities which posed installation challenges to Mott Electric, one of the oldest and largest electrical contracting companies in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

“Mott Electric is experienced in lighting projects – installing the product itself was easy,” said Jenna Brewer. “However, the site’s unique layout tested our crew’s mobility; the installation of the lighting was done by electricians wearing harnesses attached to a permanent safety line. The process of moving along the ledge around the dome was slow and challenging,” explained Brewer.

Another challenge faced by Mott due to the unique structure and layout of the facility was accessing the dome’s top level where the lighting fixtures needed to be installed. The facility layout had one access point to the dome’s top level. This meant that the electrical crew had to start and finish at the same point regardless of where around the dome they had to install the fixtures, which made it very time consuming.

Lastly, “the environment of the conservatory was also unique; you don’t normally work in a warm and humid atmosphere in mid-fall/winter (when the installation took place),” said Brewer.

Mott Electric was able to finish the LED fixture installation within three-weeks.

Installing Bloedel Lighintg

Project Results

The City of Vancouver achieved its project target to reduce the energy use for lighting the dome by 60% using the same hours of operation as the original lighting.

The LED colour-changing lighting brought a new look to the Bloedel Conservatory and Queen Elizabeth Park and grabbed the public’s attention, especially around the holiday season.

The Evolution of High-bay Lighting

April 19, 2017

Over the last few years, the traditional highbay light has seen a large transformation. The good old days of High Intensity Discharge (HID) or T5 highbays has given way to the new LED products that are far more energy efficient.

The Beginning of the LED Evolution

For more than 20 years, the HID highbay was the standard for lighting large areas such as warehouses, big box retail and most industrial facilities. Changes to more efficient types of lighting, mainly T5 HO, became more prevalent in the early 2000s for areas that did not require industrial specification. T5 technology was a good way to decrease energy costs by up to 25% and helped address the issue of rapid lumen depreciation in HID technology. T5 technology, while a better solution for many highbay applications, also had its downfalls. T5 fixtures have 4 to 6 lamps per fixture and the testing methods for these lamps led to potential premature failure of some bulbs before the rated life and costly spot replacement to maintain the fixtures. Another difficulty of T5 was that it was not a simple circular fixture with hook mounting, like the traditional HID, instead replacement required new mounting hardware and was difficult to line up due to its square shape.

Then came this new lighting technology, LED, that promised to address all the issues of HID and T5.

5 Ways LED Improved HID Highbay Lighting

1. Increased efficiency by more than 50%

The new LED highbays are over 50% more efficient than the HID, which vastly reduces energy consumption. How? In LED lamps, the majority of the electricity is used towards making more light while little to none is being used to generate heat, making it more energy-efficient.

2. Longer product life

LED highbays offer life expectancies of 50,000 hours or greater. This is due to the fact that LEDs rarely burn out like traditional lamps do; instead, they gradually produce less output over a longer period of time and the lifespan is measured by 30% lumen depreciation.

3. LED directionality

Unlike traditional lamps which spread light more spherically, LED light is very directional. This allows LED highbays to increase lumen output while working more efficiently than traditional sources leading to decreased wattages.

4. LED durability

Unlike traditional lamps, LEDs do not have filaments and hence are not as sensitive to jarring and bumping, making LEDs perfect for industrial and commercial applications. Fluorescent technology is very temperature sensitive, they do not function well at cold temperatures, whereas LEDs work better in a colder ambient temperature. This makes LEDs ideal for outdoor storage and cold storage applications.

This was the future of highbay lighting, all these great features, but what was the catch? Cost!

Although these new LED lights were the perfect solution, the initial cost of this new technology was staggering and acceptance of LED was minimal. LED technology was just evolving: could it be trusted to work in any environment; it must have weaknesses? These weaknesses soon came to light; they were sensitive to heat, they required huge heat sinks that made them heavy, and they did not look like traditional products.

Over the last 3 to 4 years, LED technology has rapidly addressed all of these weaknesses. Products are now available to work in high temperature, the life spans have increased to greater than 100,000 hours, and the traditional looks are now the normal.

Nonetheless, the biggest advancement has been the reduction of overall cost.

5. Reduced overall costs

Today, LED highbays are available for direct replacement of HID or T5 while the cost premium for LED is minimal. The new era of LED highbay technology is upon us! LED highbays are now cost competitive, readily available, and with the advantage of technology are smaller, lighter and last longer than ever before. Also, due to their high energy-efficiency and long lifespan, they cost less to maintain as they use less energy and require less frequent replacement. When you are choosing between LED and traditional highbays, think of more than just the initial cost; the total cost of LED ownership is significantly lower and is unfortunately often overlooked.
