]]>
Warmer weather is here, and festivals, fairs, and carnivals are in full swing.

Whether you’re a contractor working on a large outdoor event, or an organizer, follow these key steps to ensure the electrical power meets your needs and runs smoothly.

Preparing Your Electrical Equipment for an Outdoor Event

Step 1: Understand The Space

Before you power up a large outdoor event, it’s important to know the venue.

First, identify the size of the space, the number of attendees, and the likely power requirements for your lighting, sound, and safety needs. If you don’t have exact attendee numbers, err on the side of caution and assume there will be more participants rather than fewer. If possible, visit the site in person to get a first-hand look at the space.

Also, ensure you get a timetable of the event. That way, you can identify how much power you need at each time to avoid an electrical overload.

Step 2: Identify What You Need

The exact equipment you’ll need depends on the event’s size and scope, but here’s a general overview of the solutions available.

Temporary Power Distribution Systems

Without a doubt, you will need a generator. We recommend this BE Power Equipment generator or this portable backup generator with inverter. These will keep uninterrupted power flowing smoothly.

You may also need a portable power station. We recommend this one by Southwire

And don’t forget to stock up on reliable batteries—you’ll need those, too!

Power Cables and Extension Cords

You’ll need plenty of power cables and sturdy extension cords, depending on your specific event’s requirements. This 50′ cable and this 100′ cable by Southwire are reliable options.

Don’t forget about cable protectors and other wire management supplies. Protect your cables to keep the event running smoothly and safely.

Lighting Equipment

You may also require lighting, depending on the time of day and other factors. Consider string lights, spotlights, and lamps to illuminate pathways and poorly lit areas.

For event personnel, keep flashlights and headlamps on hand. This Klein Tools flashlight and this Rack-A-Tiers rechargeable headlamp are great choices!

Portable Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)

Designed for easy transport, portable GFCIs are a must-have for safety at large outdoor events. These compact devices help mitigate shocks and short circuits, ensuring that your event runs safely.

Either plug them into existing non-GFCI outlets, or connect with a cord and plug. These GFCIs include a no-voltage release device that disconnects power to outlets if a supply conductor opens. The ones designed specifically for outdoor use come in enclosures, but if you’re expecting rain at the event, make sure they’re waterproof.

Additional Considerations

This is just an introduction to help you get the lay of the land. You’ll likely need other products, such as cable ramps or environmentally friendly power choices. Check out our previous blog on the best products for summer adventures for more ideas.

Step 3: Set Up

Once you’ve determined the event’s requirements and what you need, it’s time to set up. Preparation is key to a flawless power setup, and we’re here to ensure your event goes off without a hitch.

How to Design the Best Office Lighting for Productivity

Productivity isn’t just impacted by staff’s energy levels, motivation, or community at work. In fact, lighting can play a significant role in productivity.

Well-designed office lighting systems can actually increase productivity by up to 20%! Thoughtful design and lighting ergonomics can make a big difference.

Whether you’re a commercial property manager or a business owner, here are a few ways anyone can use optimal lighting design techniques to support productivity in commercial office spaces.

How Office Lighting Impacts Productivity

On an individual level, productivity is impacted by a wide range of factors, including such as taking well-calculated breaks, propertly prioritizing tasks, and regular exercise and a healthy diet.

But beyond individual motivations, improper lighting conditions can have adverse effects on your staff’s proper productivity levels. Poor lighting, such as glare or insufficient light, can contribute to health problems, decrease workers’ well-being, and lower their cognitive function. No building manager or office owner wants that.

That’s why it’s important to ensure your offices are well-lit and optimized for productivity. Here are five key design tips to start the process.

5 Essential Office Lighting Design Tips

1. Maximize Natural Light

First thing’s first: maximize your natural light. (This can reduce office workers’ eyestrain and headaches by 84%.)

Start by maximizing natural light from windows and skylights, or by incorporating light-coloured or reflective surfaces, such as white walls, glass partitions, and mirrored finishes.

You can also add light shelves, which are horizontal surfaces installed near windows that reflect daylight deeper into a building.

Ultimately, heavy curtains, blinds, and tall furniture can block light, so try to keep the areas surrounding windows clear.

2. Optimize Task Lighting

Next, focus on task lighting.

Consider installing desk lamps and task lights above work surfaces to minimize glare and shadows. That way, employees can adjust the brightness and colour temperature to their needs. In conference rooms, consider installing overhead pendant lights, adjustable task lighting to tables, and floor lamps for collaborative spaces.

3. Minimize Glare

Now it’s time to reduce excessive glare.

Glare from overhead lights and screens can cause headaches and eyestrain, impacting your workers health and well-being, which can impact morale and reduce overall productivity levels.

To avoid this, use indirect lighting fixtures, and position screens away from direct light sources. You can also use diffusers or shields on overhead fixtures to distribute light more evenly.

4. Opt for Adjustable Controls

Now, consider adjustable lighting controls

These and other smart office lighting solutions allow employees to dim or brighten overhead lights, adjust colour temperature, or control task lighting as they see fit.

These options are especially valuable for hybrid or shared work spaces. Adjustable lighting can not only improve your workers’ sense of comfort, but can reduce unnecessary energy costs too.

Consider installing dimmers to adjust brightness levels throughout the day, as well as tunable white lighting systems to customize colour temperature and mimic natural daylight.

5. Prioritize Energy Efficiency with LEDs

Lastly, prioritize LED.

LEDs use significantly less electricity, need fewer replacements, lower utility bills, reduce maintenance costs over time, and offer many other benefits

But not only is this beneficial from a cost-savings perspective, by upgrading to tunable white LEDs that adjust colour temperature, your office can mimic natural changes in daylight and promote alertness during midday hours.

Summer time is coming soon, and that signals the beginning of the summer maintenance season. Among the many tasks on the facilities manager’s checklist, electrical projects stand out as a crucial component in ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment for the upcoming school year.

Upgrade your Lighting for Efficiency and Sustainability

Traditional lighting systems are gradually being replaced by LED lights, and now LEDs are becoming the new standard. LED lights consume significantly less energy than traditional bulbs, leading to substantial cost savings on electricity bills. This is crucial for schools striving to reduce their environmental footprint. Plus, their longer lifespan reduces the frequency of replacements and maintenance, minimizing disruptions and saving maintenance expenses.

Enhancing the Learning Environment

Having the proper illumination creates a more comfortable learning environment for students and teachers. LED lights emit bright and uniform illumination that enhances visibility. With customizable colour temperatures, LED lighting can also be tailored to suit various educational activities and settings, promoting engagement and participation.

Optimizing Energy Usage with Lighting Controls

Implementing lighting controls can also optimize energy usage and enhance convenience. Lighting controls equipped with sensors can detect motion and measure natural light levels, allowing for dynamic adjustments to lighting levels. This ensures that lights are on only when needed, minimizing energy waste and complementing natural daylight. Teachers and facility managers can take advantage of programmable timers and dimmers to schedule lighting and accommodate lighting preferences for different activities.

Enhance Connectivity and Learning Opportunities

Investing in a robust data communications infrastructure is essential for facilitating seamless connectivity and learning opportunities. Shocking Safety: Exploring The Littlefuse Shock Block For Ultimate Protection

Shock Protection for Larger Loads

The Shock Block SB5000 meets the requirements for GFCIs and special-purpose GFCIs (SPGFCIs) defined by UL 943 and UL 943C

 • Protect yourself and workers from electrical shock where standard GFCI breakers and receptacles are not available
 • Monitors the continuity of the ground circuit to isolate electrical hazards before they lead to shock events
 • The internal contactor life is prolonged b undervoltage, brownout and chatter detection
 • GFCI models have a fixed 6 mA trip level (Class A)
 • Special-purpose GFCI models have a fixed 20 mA trip level (Class C and D)
 • EGFPD models can be set to trip at 6, 10, 20…100 mA in increments of 10 mA

Shock Block Applications

Food & Beverage Processing

All cables used in heavy portable equipment are prone to wear and tear. Cable couplers are more susceptible to water ingress, and the shock hazards in these wet environments are just as lethal as the higher industrial voltages.

The SB5000’s NEMA 4X and IP69K rated enclosures allow for protection and operation out on the production floor instead of complicated installations in dry electrical rooms. Utilizing the ground check feature available on every model of the Shock Block, is a proactive way to isolate the hazard caused by damaged cords and plugs before someone gets shocked.

Read Case Study

Commercial Garages, Service Bays, & Maintenance Shops

Portable equipment is frequently used in commercial Garages, service Bays, and maintenance shops. The frequent use of portable equipment to accommodate different tasks can create or lead to situations where shock is more likely to occur. When a worker is focused on a task in front of them, leakage current from damaged cords and cables can present itself to those unsuspecting personnel.

For welding applications, if the ground lead is damaged or not setup properly, then welding current will take alternate paths through facility structure, ground conductors, and conduit fittings. When this stray current runs through conduit or control panels, it causes the conductors to heat up and melt insulation. The SB5000’s built-in ground monitoring ensures the effective ground-fault current path stays intact and proactively prevents future shock hazards from occurring.

Read Case Study

How Does The Shock Block Work?

When a leakage current is detected the SB5000 interrupts the circuit, significantly reducing or eliminating the shock potential. One key safety feature is that the SB5000 also monitors the ground wire from the SB5000 to the load for continuity. If the wire is broken or becomes loose, the SB5000 will signal an alarm and de- energize the circuit in less than half of a second.

1. Current travels through body
2. Current transformer picks up current imbalance
3. Sensor detects current flowing outside of its intended path and opens circuit. Fault is cleared and personnel are protected
4. Loss of grounding will de-energize load (if ground wire is high resistance, a ground fault can create a hazardous voltage across the human body)

Property Managers, It’s Time to Check Your Smoke Alarm Batteries

Mark your calendars: March 10 is Check Your Batteries Day. For most people, this day might not mean much. But for property managers, we like to think it’s a helpful reminder to check each and every smoke alarm battery in your buildings. Here are some tips on battery-related tasks that property managers should complete to keep your buildings and tenants safe.

Benefits of Checking Smoke Alarm Batteries Regularly

You play a critical role in early hazard detection by ensuring that all safety devices—including smoke alarms, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors—in your building have functional batteries. These are the main benefits of checking them regularly:

 • Save lives with early detection. First and foremost, functional safety devices provide early warnings in the event of a fire or CO leak, allowing residents to evacuate quickly. Checking them regularly obviously minimizes any risk of a worse-off problem down the road.
 • Prevent property damage and save money, too. Timely detection of smoke or CO can prevent extensive property damage by allowing for swift responses during emergencies. This can limit the spread of a fire, for example, or minimize the impact of CO exposure in a building.
 • Comply with regulations. Regular battery checks and replacements ensure compliance with regulations that call for properly functioning safety devices, helping you keep tenants safe while avoiding potential fines and legal issues. Get familiar with regulations in your area, whether your building is located in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, or elsewhere.
 • Avoid nuisance alarms. Low battery signals cause annoying nuisance alarms, which can be prevented with regular battery checks.

How Often Should I Check Smoke Alarm Batteries?

Smoke alarms vary from model to model, but most of the same maintenance rules apply:

 • Conduct semi-annual battery checks. Check smoke alarm batteries at least twice a year. Choosing specific dates, such as Check Your Batteries Day, or the beginning and end of daylight saving time, every fall and spring, can help you remember to inspect and replace batteries.
 • Inspect seasonally. Conduct thorough alarm inspections along with your other regular seasonal maintenance checks to easily and quickly identify any issues.
 • Be proactive about replacing batteries. Consider replacing batteries annually, even if they’re functional during routine checks. Fresh batteries reduce the risk of malfunction and ensure reliable performance.

What Do the Different Smoke Alarm Noises Mean?

Understanding different smoke alarms is an essential part of promptly addressing fire hazards and ensuring the well-being of your building’s residents.

Here’s how to troubleshoot the different sounds your alarms make.

 • Intermittent chirping or beeping. Chirps or beeps at regular intervals means it’s time to get new batteries. A blinking red light on your device often also lets you know the batteries are running low.
 • Rapid beeping. A rapid, continuous beeping noise means the smoke alarm has detected smoke or fire within the building. Evacuate your building immediately and call 9-1-1, if needed.
 • Continuous alarm. If a smoke alarm emits a continuous alarm sound, it’s detecting significant smoke or fire. Activate the building’s fire alarm system, evacuate occupants, and call 9-1-1.
 • Malfunctioning sounds. Unusual or irregular sounds can indicate a malfunction or a problem with the detector’s internal components. Be sure to investigate promptly and replace the smoke alarm, if necessary.

Best Practices for Property Managers

Understanding and implementing best practices for checking safety devices is crucial. To keep you on track, here’s a handy checklist:

 • Set a regular schedule. Inspect and test smoke alarm batteries at least twice a year. You can coordinate these checks with other routine maintenance tasks. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and fire safety regulations in your area.
 • Replace batteries annually. Be proactive and replace smoke alarm batteries yearly, even if they’re still functional, to prevent issues. Choose high-quality, long-life batteries for best performance.
 • Educate tenants. Remind your building’s occupants about smoke alarm maintenance and the importance of promptly reporting malfunctioning alarms or low battery signals. Give tenants clear instructions on how to test alarms, which can be done monthly. Share a list of fire safety tips with your building’s occupants.
 • Keep a maintenance record. Maintain a detailed record of inspections, battery replacements, and any maintenance or repair work.
 • Replace safety devices. To ensure continued functionality, know when to upgrade your devices. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and you’ll need new CO detectors every five to seven years.

Kidde Alarms: a Trusted Choice

Kidde is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fire safety products, such as alarms that detect smoke, CO, water leaks, and freezes, as well as monitor air quality (including mould growth). Many of the company’s products are compatible with the Kidde App—which works with Google Home and Alexa—facilitating simplified monitoring, and allowing for the use of voice commands to check alarm status and connection.

The Kidde Smoke and CO Alarm With Indoor Air Quality Monitor has built-in air quality sensors to measure temperature, relative humidity, and total volatile organic compounds—harmful chemicals in your air that can impact your health—along with many other key features. You can receive hazard notifications with the Kidde app that let you know when an alarm needs to be replaced or tested.

Kidde also offers a smoke and CO alarm with smart detection features. Interested in learning more about residential fire safety? Check out Kidde’s four key steps to residential fire safety—these are great tips to share with tenants, too!

Make Safety Your Top Priority

Regularly checking the batteries in devices such as smoke alarms is critical to ensuring the safety of a building. Include battery checks and replacements in your regular maintenance routine to safeguard lives and assets from the threat of fire hazards.

Are you an electrician working for a mining company? Then you—and your employer—might want to ensure that your mine’s electrical solutions are up to date.

If your mine isn’t staying ahead of the electrical curve, you may be hindering your team’s efficiency and productivity; and you risk being outperformed by competitors. But most importantly, you may not be maximizing your team’s safety.

Here are some ways to help bring your mine’s electrical system up to speed.

Mining Solutions from our Supplier Partners

Power Distribution for Motor Control Systems

You’ll need a specialized solution, and automation systems are the way to go. But the question is: motor control panels (MCPs) or motor control centres (MCCs)? Which one’s better for your mine site?

Both MCPs and MCCs offer efficient control systems for industrial motors, conveyors, fans, and pumps. Which you choose will depend on the size and scope of your project. Get in touch with our team of experts to help you make the right call.

Hazardous-Location Lighting Solutions

Lighting is integral to your team’s safety, productivity, and efficiency. By selecting products from our reputable brands, such as ABB Electrification, you can explore a wide variety of industrial-use and explosion-proof lighting solutions, like ABB’s HazLux line.

Whether you need area, flood, linear, or emergency lighting for demanding indoor or outdoor applications, the HazLux line is an outstanding choice for mines of all sizes. Check out this case study to see how the HazLux line can improve safety in hazardous settings.

Protection Relays

If your goal is to improve connectivity throughout your site, while also prioritizing sustainability and safety, look no further than Littelfuse. Choose from a wide range of Littelfuse industrial solutions such as fuses, fuse holders, timers, and surge protection devices. Browse their collection of ground-fault relays, arc-flash relays, motor and pump protection and more.
