E.B. Horsman Cares is our community engagement program that supports local children’s hospitals, communities, and non-profit initiatives with donations, fundraising, volunteering, and scholarships. We are strongly committed and passionate to giving back to local communities in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
Giving back is one of our core company values, and our entire team, as well as many of our customer and supplier partners are engaged throughout the year in various initiatives to fundraise and give back to the communities that we serve. These initiatives include but are not limited to: silent auctions, chili cook-offs, sports pools, jeans day, food drives, cookbook sales and charity poker tournaments.
Everyone at E.B. Horsman helps make a difference through acts of giving; big and small. Our team is always finding new and creative ways to engage the community and have fun while raising money for Children’s Hospitals.
BC Children’s Hospital has been the primary recipient of E.B. Horsman & Son’s fundraising since 1993. At that time, E.B. Horsman & Son was primarily BC-based and chose to focus the majority of their corporate and fundraising efforts on a charity that would impact as many communities as possible across B.C. Regardless of their home base, many children from around the province are served by BC Children’s in Vancouver, as it’s the province’s only pediatric acute care hospital.
As E.B. Horsman has continued to expand its businesses across Western Canada, we are simultaneously expanding our commitment to be a proud supporter of local Children’s Hospitals across Alberta, and Saskatchewan, and look forward to many years of developing our support for those hospitals as well.
In 2016, E.B. Horsman & Son began contributing a portion of yearly BCCHF fundraising dollars to specifically fund the Beads of Courage program, a program within the Child Life Program, for the Oncology department at B.C. Children’s Hospital.
The Beads of Courage Program is designed to support and strengthen children and families coping with serious illness. Through the program, members tell their story using colourful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that they receive to honour and acknowledge each step of their treatment journey. Beads are given according to a specific program bead guide. For milestones in their treatment journey, they receive handmade one-of-a kind glass beads that are donated by members of Canadian glass lamp-working community.
Many of our team members, customers and suppliers have had a precious friend, family member or themselves impacted by the devastating effects of cancer, and Team E.B. Horsman is committed to raising funds to contribute to A World Free of Cancer. Since 2017, we have raised a cumulative total of $141,106 to this very important cause by participating in both the:
The money you gift benefits Cancer Foundation in both Alberta and BC and supports leading clinicians, scientists, and researchers whose search for new discoveries and improved patient outcomes will have a significant impact in our communities across Canada, and around the world.
At E.B. Horsman & Son, we believe that scholarships benefit students, families and communities. By taking some of the financial pressure off of students and families, we can enable greater success in post-secondary education and help deserving students who want to graduate and give back to society.
In addition, our scholarship programs help us cope with challenges surrounding talent management, succession planning and general market awareness in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Focused on Western Canada, the scholarships are available to students enrolled in technical programs that offer training in electrical, instrumentation or building technologies.
E.B. Horsman & Son demonstrates its dedication to its employees and future generations by providing financial support for post-secondary education via the H.G. Horsman scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to children of E. B. Horsman & Son employees who exhibit both academic proficiency and strong leadership ability in school, social and other activities, and who are entering their first year of post-secondary education at an accredited Canadian college, university or technical/trade school.
E.B. Horsman & Son is a proud supporter of the Electro Federation Canada (EFC) scholarship program. For more than two decades, EFC has been supporting university and college students in their pursuit of a career in the electrical industry. Every year, EFC awards in excess of $100,000 to more than 50 worthy recipients.
“I am absolutely thrilled to receive the E.B. Horsman & Son Scholarship Award,” said Trent Arnott, recipient of the E.B. Horsman EFC Scholarship 2015, “One of my instructors at BCIT explained that our class will be only 1% of the population in this important field. Our society is becoming ever-dependent on technology and alarmingly there are so few skilled people seeking careers in it. Scholarships encourage people to enter into the field of technology, and make it possible to focus on studying without financial stress. I would like to thank E.B. Horsman & Son for this Award, and would recommend youth to apply and get into the trades and technology.”
E.B. Horsman & Son is committed to support BCIT students throughout their enrollment in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program’s Automation and Instrumentation option. We contribute financially towards two BCIT awards every year: An Entrance award which is awarded in the fall, and a Graduating Achievement award granted in June.
“I am very honoured and grateful to be the 2017 recipient of the E.B. Horsman & Son Award” said Shaun Tyers, . “I feel inspired and humbled to be sponsored by my dream industry. I have always worked hard to build a solid future for myself. I acknowledge that everyone has limits and have been focusing on my studies at BCIT primarily to ensure I make the most out of my opportunity. The E.B. Horsman award makes a direct contribution to my efforts and allows me to take the extra strides I need to really focus on studying opposed to spending time in supplementary employment. I am confident that with this award I will be capable of maintaining my work ethic and strong study habits. Thank you E.B. Horsman & Son for not only helping build a strong foundation for myself now but for also helping me become a better engineer for my future”.
E.B. Horsman & Son is proud to support Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s scholastic program by offering scholarships to students who achieved above-average academic performance. To be considered, the student must be a Canadi an citizen, exhibit leadership in his/her local business community, and enrolled in one of the following programs.
“I am honoured to be the recipient of the 2017 E.B. Horsman Award” said Sandy Chu. “The scholarship will greatly assist me in completing my Accounting degree at KPU and pursing the CPA designation. Inspired by your generosity, I will continue to give back to my local community through service and leadership, ensuring that others have access to the opportunities that I have been given”.
By supporting Kwantlen students in British Columbia, we remain committed to our goal of helping our local communities thrive. We are always looking for talented, enthusiastic and committed people who can contribute to our longstanding traditions of service excellence, integrity and innovation.
E.B. Horsman & Son is an active partner with BC Hydro and organizations offering other Power Smart programs. Our familiarity and involvement with BC Hydro’s Power Smart program allow us to provide value-added services to our customers looking to reduce their power consumption.
We actively promote and support suppliers of green technology products. These efforts, which align with our lighting control strategy, include sales of occupancy sensors and lighting control products –and as well as helps our customers understand the requirements of the ASHRAE 90.1 2010 standard.
E.B. Horsman & Son is a Product Care Advisory Committee (PCA) member. PCA currently operates lamp product-stewardship programs in B.C., Manitoba and Quebec. The B.C. and Manitoba programs are known as LightRecycle, while the Quebec program is known as RecycFluo.
Additionally, our participation in PCA allows us to be involved in the development, implementation and revision of new and existing programs, ensuring that they meet the needs of our business. Furthermore, our PCA membership ensures that we are at the forefront of these programs – and are viewed as an industry leader that knows how to implement them.
We have undertaken various initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint. Our streamlined warehouse-management and ERP systems allow us to operate our central distribution warehouse in a nearly paperless environment.
The central distribution warehouse also reduces waste and recycling needs by utilizing reusable shipping totes, crates and mailbags. The warehouse team appropriately disposes of more than 90% of plastic and cardboard. We have installed a trash compacter at our head office to reduce the number of truckloads of recyclable cardboard leaving the central distribution warehouse. Lighting fixtures, lamps and metal are also recycled at the central distribution warehouse and all of the company’s other warehouses.
Periodically, we donate demonstration samples to technical schools for training purposes, and to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.
We are incredibly grateful to Cory Evans and the EB Horsman Team for the generous and selfless way they have supported the John Howard KidStart Mentoring Program over the years. As a program that relies on fundraising and grant writing to support many of our communities’ vulnerable children and youth, we thank you for your amazing efforts to help the families we serve!
