Welcome to March – Ladder Safety Month! With ladder accidents ranking among the top causes of workplace injuries, this month is dedicated to raising awareness about this critical issue. In Canada alone, approximately 34,000 people suffer falls from ladders each year, highlighting the urgent need for improved knowledge and practices in ladder usage.
Some tips to keep you and everyone around you safe:
When choosing a ladder, make sure the ladder is suitable for the height you need to climb
Have a reliable, durable ladder and ensure there are no faulty mechanisms before climbing
Always keep three points of contact between you and the ladder- two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand
Wear proper, clean footwear without mud, ice, or grease
When using a long ladder or tying/untying ladder extension, have a second person hold the bottom of the ladder
Observe you’re surrounding and spot any potential hazards before you climb; this could be any harnesses or ties on you that may interfere while you climb the ladder
Keep a firm grip while you climb
Do not use aluminum ladders when working near electricity
Reposition the ladder to work from the center of the steps
If your knees are above the top step, then you are too high!
